Welcome About the Cover The Rio Grande Valley is a great place to get outside. It is evident by how many Winter Texans get out and play golf regularly. Because of the climate here in South Texas, you can play golf nearly year-round. Featured here is South Padre Island Golf Course, a course that has been a top choice for Winter Texans for years. (Courtesy Photo) Winter Texans and year-round residents get together weekly during the season and participate in the Senior Softball League. Weather permitting, games are held nearly every week from January to March. The league holds a yearly Veterans Softball Game and a favorite among our Winter visitors is the USA vs. Canada game held in the Spring. (Photo taken by Henry Miller) Golf is on the rise, and according to golf.com, Texas is leading the way. Shary Municipal Golf Course has been a favorite among Winter Texans in the upper Valley. In 2011, the course clubhouse received some much-needed renovations. Since then, the course itself has continued to improve their holes and options available to visitors. (Photo taken by Kathy Olivarez) The Valley hosts several Red Hatter groups that get together monthly, sometimes more often. They take in local sites, and always love trying out the variety of local restaurants. The Valley Red Hatters hold a Red Hat Festival every February. Each table is decorated with a theme. In addition to the activities in the parks and resorts, Winter Texans enjoy local community festivals such as the Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission, Hidalgo’s BorderFest and Festival of Lights, Weslaco’s Onion Festival, and Brownsville’s Charro Days celebration. Many also enjoy visiting the beach at South Padre Island – a short drive from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley – as well as many historical sites and quality museums all across the Valley, such as the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg and International Museum of Arts and Science in McAllen. More and more retirees are discovering the pleasure of birding, and there is no better place in the United States to see over 500 species of birds such as can be found here. Many species, known as Valley specialties, can be found nowhere else in the United States. Combine this with the convergence of major bird migration flyways here in the Valley and you have a natural birding paradise.
