This poetry festival celebrates the Mexican American culture on the South Texas borderlands. The festival explores the past, present, and future as a community through the art of storytelling. Join in for a night full of art and cultura at the McIntyre Promenade Courtyard (415 W. University Dr.) on Friday, October 22, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Celebrate life on the borderlands as an array of poets from different regions of the Valley perform their original poems for the first time. Bring some friends for some tasty food, drinks, live music, vendors, and even a lowrider display. Music will be curated by Rio Grande Valley artists DJ Flacucho, Fronterawave, Mariachi Azucenas, and Genesis, with a special performance by San Antonio Hip Hop Emcee, MexStep. On Monday, October 24, The City of Edinburg will host the seventh annual Filipino Festival at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard starting at 5 p.m. The Edinburg Filipino Committee and the City of Edinburg invite you to experience the authentic Filipino cuisines through a food tasting of pancit, egg rolls, and lechon. The festival will feature guest speakers, Filipino food demos, a people’s choice karaoke contest, Filipino American trivia, and a traditional Salanhi cultural celebration. The committee is excited to present guest poet Marlene Jimenez, feature music performance by Arnold Villamero, and dance performances by UTRGV’s Filipino Student Association. The City Hall Courtyard, located at 415 W. University Drive, will host the Filipino Festival filled with vendors, artists, and Filipino culture. The Filipino Festival will culminate a three-day weekend cultural celebration that kicks off with the Poetry Festival, followed by the largest cultural festival in the City of Edinburg, Los Muertos Bailan – a day of the dead festival. The events are free and open to the public. Parking will be available at City Hall. For more information on this event, visit edinburgarts.com or contact the library at (956) 383-6246.
