The guest speaker for their October 25th meeting will be Dr. Hudson DeYoe. He will be giving a presentation on the status of seagrass in the Lower Laguna Madre. Dr. DeYoe is a professor in the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences, and the Biology Department of the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, as well as the Associate Director of the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences. His research interests are the impacts of man on aquatic ecosystems, algal and seagrass ecology, and the use of algae in biotechnology. Much of his research has been published. The program will be Tuesday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border St., in Weslaco behind Gibson Park. Public is welcome. There is no charge to attend. Humane Society of Harlingen over capacity The Humane Society of Harlingen dog kennels are at capacity. HSH is asking the community to help nd foster or forever homes for their canine friends. Dogs will be at risk of euthanasia if they cannot make space through adoption or foster. For a limited time, all adoption fees for dogs are completely donation based, meaning the adopter can choose how much to leave as a donation. All adopted pets will go home up to date on vaccinations, dewormed, on preventatives for eas/ticks/heartworms, microchipped and either already spayed/neutered, or with an appointment to spay/neuter at no cost to the adoptive family. Anybody interested in adopting a dog should head to the shelter as soon as possible. All adoptions are done on a rst come, rst serve basis, curbside. Fostering a pet is always free and incredibly rewarding. HSH will provide foster parents with everything they will need to care for the pet, including food, toys, and other care items. Foster families can customize the length of foster to meet their availability, with foster periods lasting a few hours to a few months. Adopting or fostering a pet from the shelter makes an immediate lifesaving impact, for the animal going home and for the incoming animals needing that open kennel.
