Local birders along with birders from around the world will all flock to Harlingen to attend the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. The festival held at the Harlingen Convention Center is scheduled from November 9-11. There will be something for all ages to enjoy. Now if you are a dedicated birder, you will have already registered for this annual event. Not only have you pre-registered but you will have your alarm set for a very, very early wake up call. That’s right - you will be getting up before the birds. Special tours to known tried and true birding spots will start early. Depending on your destination you may be boarding your bus by 4 a.m. That’s what birding is all about. What do they say - the early bird catches the worm? Well, in this case the early birder spots the bird. Over 500 different bird species have been recorded in the Rio Grande Valley. Only two or three other states have such an impressive record. So why wouldn’t people from around the world want to visit our tropical paradise to catch a glimpse of an extra bird or two to add to their life list. Seminar leaders and birding guides famous for their knowledge, experience and leadership will add to the opportunity for all of us to learn more about our bird friends. You certainly do not have to be a birder to enjoy this festival. Years ago, my seven-year-old grandson and I spent a wonderful afternoon together at the festival. I was sure that he was bored and really did not seem to be paying much attention. He was just too quiet - maybe I had chosen the wrong entertainment. Was I ever surprised when the next morning at breakfast he excitedly repeated almost word for word all that he had learned at the exhibitions. So come on down and go on over to the Harlingen Convention Center. Maybe you can build some memories for a young friend or just for yourself as you learn what nature has to offer. The Rio Grande Birding Festival is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to learn more about our Valley Paradise. For more information about events and times, visit their website at www.rgvbf.org.
