The freedoms we enjoy every day were hard-fought for but are easily lost. Here are some events you can attend this Friday to honor the Veterans in your family and in our community. Veterans War Memorial of Texas in McAllen On November 11, the public is invited to a Veterans Day program at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas in McAllen (29th St. and Col. Plummer) at 9 a.m. There will be patriotic music before the ceremony and a keynote speaker. For more information, contact Col. Frank Plummer at (956) 631-2511. Harlingen Events Harlingen will honor Veterans at 11 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park at Pendleton Park, 1425 Morgan Blvd. The event will be held on Friday, November 11 and is free to the public. Sgt. Sal Carmona will welcome guests and provide opening remarks. The Harlingen Police and Fire Department Color Guards will present colors. Frank Hall will deliver an invocation, and Heidi Dill will sing the national anthem. The mayor will welcome Veterans and guests, along with other speakers, and a patriotic song honoring Veterans will be performed. Call (956) 245-1276 for more information. Join the community at Rio Fest for an exciting event at Harlingen Baseball Field, 1216 Fair Park Blvd. Gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 11, with a Veterans Day Celebration shortly after. Opening ceremony will be the Veterans Memorial Project Committee featuring a patriotic tribute to all Veterans and their families. For more information, visit www.harlingenriofest.com City of San Benito The City of San Benito will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11 starting with a March of Veterans at 9 a.m. It will be held at the Veterans War Memorial, 151 E. Rowson. Marine Military Academy The Marine Military Academy will host its Veterans Day Parade on Friday, November 11 at 8 a.m. on the MMA Parade Grounds. Veterans from all military branches are encouraged to attend, as they will be honored at the event. The public is also invited to attend. MMA’s battalion-sized parades are always held in front of the historic Iwo Jima Monument, a symbol of American pride for Veterans, Marines and civilians alike. Although bleacher seating is available, parade-goers may bring lawn chairs. MMA is located at 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., off Loop 499 and next to Valley International Airport in Harlingen. For more information on the Veterans Day Parade, call (956) 421-9225. City of Mission The City of Mission is honoring local military heroes with a Veterans Appreciation BBQ, Friday, November 1. The event will be held at the Mission Event Center (200 N. Shary Rd.) and will feature a chicken plate with all the trimmings, while supplies last. It will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Veterans are urged to decorate their vehicles. Military ID is required for the free meal. The Rio Grande Valley State Veteran’s Cemetery, 2520 Inspiration Rd., will be open for visitation on Friday. City of Mercedes The American Legion Family Post 172, Mercedes Independent School District and the City of Mercedes will be hosting their 10th Annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 12 at 10 a.m. It will be held in Downtown Mercedes on Texas Avenue. City of Alamo The City of Alamo will hold a Veteran’s Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11, at 9 a.m. The event will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, 311 N. Alamo Rd.
