Following the opening prayer, a brief history of the day was shared. Then all in attendance joined together in the singing of our National Anthem and God Bless America. Pastor Mark McDonald of Mission West Church presented each Veteran who attended with a special star taken directly from a decommissioned American Flag courtesy of the Warrior 180 Foundation. Food Bank RGV in need of donations The Food Bank RGV is in dire need of monetary donations to help feed people at risk of hunger this season. Rising costs are responsible for many people turning to the food bank for emergency food assistance, many for the first time. Due to the increase in need, higher costs, and supply chain issues, the food bank is working harder than ever to meet the growing needs of the community. “We are constantly moving food out the doors to our partner agencies and trying to restock our shelves,” said Libby A. Saenz, chief executive officer of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. “However, we cannot do this alone. We need the community’s help. Donations are down but expenses keep going up.” For those experiencing a food emergency, the food bank’s onsite emergency pantry provides a bag of shelf stable foods and a referral to a pantry near them, for the next month, in case they need it. The Food Bank RGV is currently serving an average of 76,000 people a week through its 275 partner agencies.
