We are so very thankful to all of those that make the Valley Star Awards what it is. Our volunteers, the Wintertainers™, Mission Bell, Chris Marshall, our children, and of course, to you, our Winter Texan friends. It’s always a fun time when we get to hang out with you, and the Valley Star Awards is one of those events that we look forward to each year. Our anticipation for the event is just as grand as yours. We had a record number of votes this year, and a record number of attendees. It was so neat to see that room full of Wintertainers™ and Winter Texans. The entertainers for the event had so much fun preparing for you and performing. Even through the two glitches, the show was a delight for all those that attended. We are always reminded that no matter how much you prepare, something is bound to happen. And it did, but we played right on through and still had a fun, exciting show. We try to top it every year, but it’s getting harder to do that each Improvements on Upper Valley Golf Courses have paid off Records broken at this year’s Valley Star Awards The Mission Bell Resort ball room was packed on Wednesday, February 21 with the anticipation of who won what for the Valley Star Awards. There were almost 570 Winter Texans and Wintertainers™ present during the event – a record breaking turnout. It was exciting as everyone waited for each award to be given, clapping and hollering here and there as their favorite nominees were read out loud before the winner was announced. You could tell the entertainers for the event had been preparing for weeks before as they got on the See VSA pg. 12 Champion Lakes Golf Course. Each spring we ask our readers to vote for their favorite golf courses. The Valley has many courses to choose from, and Winter Texans seem to try to catch them all while visiting the Valley. Last week we featured the lower Valley. This week we have the upper Valley, and we will also feature the mid Valley courses. By Barb Zanetti Photo by Dennis Zanetti To encourage RC racing in the Valley, New Sun Racing is sponsoring a 14-hour RGV “Dirt Oval Cup” race day on Saturday, March 2. Held at Alamo Palms RV Resort’s hard-packed dirt oval, races will begin with pits opening at 8 a.m. and continuing until 10 p.m. “This is the first of what is intended to be an annual celebration of the RC community,” Race Director Mike Fleming said. “I really like that it’s a Valley wide racing tournament.” He said that they haven’t had anything like this race since the Red, White and Blue series that used to run half a decade ago. “This new event offers racers a chance to talk to racers they don’t normally run into, to develop great camaraderie, and to get a good perspective on the RC community in the Valley,” Mike said. “To get more racers involved, we’ve worked to tailor these races to reward more than the elite racers. To accomplish this, we’ve created classes to suit a variety of skill levels.” The 55-plus category fits entry-level racers. Sportsman Class accommodates mid-level racers, with the Trophy Class ideal for competitive and seasoned racers. To give all racers a chance to compete, any racer that normally competes with Trophy Class cars is not eligible to enter the 55-Plus and Sportsman classes. (Conversely, racers that race in the 55-Plus and Sportsman’s Class will be invited to enter the Trophy Class.) Mike said that simulations for the featured AA Mains on the professional Live RC scoring program have been tested and retested to make sure that everything will run smoothly. For no charge, this system also offers racers the ability to see everything on their Smart phones (alamopalmschargers.LiveRC.com) from their starting positions to the time of their next race to race results during the actual event. Plus, fans can see live video from their smart phones during the race. President of Alamo Palms Racing Club Tarry Freeman said that the cost to race is $5 per car (including Trophy Class cars), along with the racer’s “desire to have a good time.” Registration will be onsite. “Come with a good attitude and bring a chair,” Tarry said. “For racers to prepare, it’s just a matter of setting RC vehicles to race on smooth, hard-surface dirt. Bring a few extra parts. And plan to have fun!” Tarry said that everyone should come hungry because food will be served with a special ordering system for racers who can’t leave the track area. Anyone who has questions about the event is requested to join Alamo Palms RC Facebook Page with guaranteed acceptance. 14-Hour ‘Dirt Oval Cup’ to kick off Annual RGV RC Event Race Director Mike Fleming waters the track to prep for Tuesday’s Alamo Palms RV Resort’s RC races. He and his Alamo Palms Chargers crew will oversee the March 2 “Dirt Oval Cup” track, ensuring visiting racers have an optimum surface. See RC pg. 28

Julia Stanton Peck’s book, Julia and Peter, recounts several decades of traveling the world, to more than 40 countries with her late husband Peter, a fashion photographer, who worked for many national companies from his studio in London, England. The book is also a love story about the couple who were friends for 20 years after meeting in 1982. They married 20 years later on February 2, 2002, and 12 days later on Valentine’s Day, they purchased the 112-site Val’s Kountry Corral RV Park. The book idea came through the encouragement of Larry Lammert, a Val’s Park resident from Wisconsin, who first listened to her stories from the past and then started recording them. When he reached a hundred pages, he told Julia she should consider turning it into a book, especially since her memory was so accurate and detailed. Lemmert told her, “Girl, you got it; don’t second guess yourself.” Julia finally took his advice and contacted a publisher, who liked what he had received, and the result was the book spanning her childhood that included living through the German bombing in World War II to dealing in confectionary and making ice cream. Most of the book’s chapters deal with her view of the war, with radar, RAF, Churchill’s cardboard airplanes, terror at night and the aftermath of healing from the physical and mental scars of war. There are chapters about Peter and his work, like photographing Queen Elizabeth and a lovely legs competition, plus the work at the Arizona and Manchester studios. After following in her mother’s footsteps to become a retail businesswoman, Julia ran an outdoor kiosk for many years before coming to the U.S. in 1956. She got her green card in 1959 and landed a photography job from a newspaper ad that allowed her to travel all over the U.S. Her husband, who was a cousin to the late actor Gregory Peck, came to the U.S. on a more permanent basis a few years later as he was flying across the Atlantic regularly on business. Julia said her husband figured he had crossed the Atlantic 800 times for various photo shoots. The photographer specialized in lighting and made equipment for the Kodak Book tells of war, traveling, and love New author Julia Peck, second from right, signed copies of her book Julia and Peter Friday afternoon in the clubhouse at Val’s Kountry Corral RV Park for D.J. and Sonia Villarreal, on left, longtime friends from McAllen. Assisting her at the Winter Texan Park were friends from Edinburg, Sylvia N. Fortiun, on right, and Siän Gonzalez, 3rd from right, who is in the book. Also with the group is Julia’s grandson, Christopher Woodford, visiting from England. Photo by Herb Moering See BOOK pg. 22

FEBRUARY 28, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 12 WINTER TEXAN TIMES stage. Leslie Blasing took some requests and performed some of her favorites. Attendees said she knocked it out of the park. Mark Merchant brought the crowd to boisterous laughter with his ventriloquism and his partners on stage. Diego and Edith also brought their lively music to the stage with people getting up and dancing. After a short break and the 50/50 that had two winners, attendees had the chance to hear from Dale and Mrs. Crabapple before Gayle made her appearance. Mrs. Crabapple had a few complaints about a resident at her park enjoying the pool too much. Then we had Bruce Boudreau who started with his Canadian chart-topping song “We Dance in our Kitchen,” before getting into some more familiar country tunes that the crowd enjoyed. Lastly, we had the Night Howlers close the afternoon with their trio, playing music that received participation and cheers. In between our acts we announced the winners of the Valley Star Awards. The Duet Musical of Group of the Year went to Can Am. The duo consists of Bruce Boudreau from Canada and Tom Hiles from USA. They have been making their rounds around the parks this season, just like all our Wintertainers™. They were very humbled to win the award. Tom was speechless while Bruce thanked everyone for their continued support. Individual or Small Band of the Year went to Ron Moshier. You could tell by the crowd that he is loved by all of those that attend his shows. Shake, Rattle and Roll were the Vocal Group of the Year winners. They couldn’t make it down last year but returned this year and the Winter Texans have loved having them back in town. They weren’t in attendance to receive the award but did thank their Winter Texan fans on their social media page. Mark Merchant: Two Voices in One, was quite surprised to win the Novelty, Comedy or Variety Act. He was very thankful and caught off guard to hear his name called as he was getting his dummies off the stage (as he had just performed before the announcement). Family Group of the Year went to Lindley Creek. Kathie Greer, accepting the award for the family, said it was because of the Winter Texans that they have been able to do this as a family. Without them, they wouldn’t be here. She said she is thankful for the Winter Texans enjoying their shows, and enjoying their changes each year as they try out new songs and sounds. VSA From pg. 1 Gospel Group of the Year went to Abundance Quartet. Jamie Layton was there to accept the award and said he is sure the group is goLeslie Blasing delivers a performance only a Lifetime Award recipient could. 13 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com FEBRUARY 28, 2024 ing to be surprised by the recognition. He said they look forward to the time they get to spend in South Texas. Steven May and the Southern Nights won Country Band of the Year again. And The Fabulous Cruisers were again winners of the Rock and Roll Band of the Year. Steven May gave a heartfelt thank you to all who took the time to vote for them. “We love what we do and are blessed with the best friends and fans on the planet,” said Steven May. Naomi Bristow won the Female Vocalist of the Year. She is the yodeling cowgirl that spends most of January entertaining as many parks as she can fit into her schedule. Male Vocalist went to a fairly new entertainer. Bruce Boudreau was delighted to win this year’s award. He said he was overwhelmed with gratitude to have been selected for the award and gave a huge thank you to those that voted for him. “It was an honor to stand amongst and be part of such an amazing, talented group of singers who all equally deserve to win male vocalist of the year,” said Bruce. He added that the other nominees set that bar high, and it is a privilege to entertain the Winter Texans with them. He also gave a huge shout out to his wife for supporting him because without her, this wouldn’t be possible. The coveted Entertainer of the Year Award went to Ron Moshier. “What a great day to be grateful and humble,” said Ron Moshier of the recognition. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” He said he knows his mother is watching him and is so thankful for the lessons she taught and encouraging him to play the accordion and getting him into music. He also gave a huge thank you to his fans, and his best friend for supporting him in this career. Rio Valley Estates ROGO Winter Texans create quilt to celebrate Alamo’s centennial By Herb Moering A centennial quilt, created by two Winter Texans, was officially presented to the City of Alamo at the February 20 city commission meeting. The quilt, created by Audry Stewart and Carrol Moering, is part of Alamo’s year-long celebration marking 100 years since its incorporation from a town to a city on April 26, 1924. Several museum “Friends” along with the Centennial Queen, 102-year-old Wanda Boush, long time Alamo resident, were at the presentation where the Mayor J.R. Garza and commissioners indicated they were pleased with the gift to the city. The quilt will be on display first at the Alamo City Hall until the end of the year and then can be seen at the local museum starting in 2025. The quilt idea was hatched at a Friends of the City of Alamo Museum meeting a year ago where the two women took on the project. Moering researched embroidery patterns and Stewart laid out the quilt after purchasing background fabric. Several historic photographs from the City of Alamo Museum archives were printed on fabric with the help of the museum Director Alex Oyoque. Moering embroidered the pictures and Stewart sewed them on the quilt. A quilter finished the work on what the pair see as a piece of art. Besides the names of “Friends” of the museum, there are three memorialized names—the late Alamo Fire Chief, historian and museum founder, Rolando Espinoza, and museum supporters, the late Cheddy Balli and the late Demaris Swint. The quilt carries some important aspects of local history. Other events are planned for the rest of the year to call attention to the 100th anniversary of the city. The next major event as part of the centennial celebration is the long-running Texas Independence Day parade on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. Its theme is “Alamo Is Out of This World.” March also has a program remembering the tragic train/ truck crash in Alamo that drew national headlines, which took 29 lives on March 14, 1940. The Easter Extravaganza of egg gathering for the children is at the Nature Park on March 28. April 27 will be the city’s “party of the century” celebrating the city’s many accomplishments. It will feature music, food, games, fireworks, and more from 4 to 9 p.m. in Central Park. The annual Watermelon Festival and cookoff is another centennial event, which will be held May 11. July 3 is an Independence Day celebration, and Rancheritas National Hispanic-American Heritage will be noted in September, The Halloween and Red Ribbon events are in October, with Dia de los Muertos in November and the Christmas parade in December. Additional centennial events are still in the planning stages. Park residents and members of the Friends of the City of Alamo Museum Carrol Moering, left, and Audry Stewart, right, were joined by Alamo’s 102-year-old Centennial Queen Wanda Boush to present the Centennial quilt to the City of Alamo at the Feb. 20 City Commission meeting. Carrol and Audry made the quilt over the past nine months to mark the city’s 100th year since its incorporation in April of 1924. The birthday bash of the Century is coming up on Saturday, April 27 at Central Park from 4 to 9 p.m. Photo courtesy of Alex Oyoque, City of Alamo Museum director/curator
