The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Quilt Guild has had a program for many years where quilts have been made and given to veterans who reside in the RGV full time. The military service quilts are red, white, and blue and measure 60” x 72” when finished. What has become known as a “Military Sew Day” is when quilters, as well as other volunteers, meet to construct these cloth masterpieces. On these days, those who attend work together for the single day to complete as much as possible. Wednesday, January 15, the RGV Quilt Guild gathered for the day, as they have for quite a few years, to create military service quilts during a “Military Sew Day” at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo. Quilters from all over the Valley, along with quilters and others from Trophy Gardens, spent the bulk of their day planning, measuring, cutting, sewing, and more as a part of the process of assembling these unique quilts for those who have given so much of themselves to serve our country. Lucy Klaas, who until very recently served as the Chairperson of the RGV Quilt Guild, is a part of the Trophy Gardens community. She promotes the military quilt program in Trophy Gardens as well as throughout the RGV. Lucy explains that the requirements for receiving a military service quilt are that the person is a veteran of any of the branches of the military and also lives full-time in the RGV. Not only has Trophy Gardens supported the Military Service Quilt Program, but the park’s veterans who reside here full-time have also been the appreciative recipients of some of these quilts. This past November on Veterans Day, Lucy, on behalf of the RGV Quilt Guild, presented eleven Trophy Gardens’ veterans with their own handmade quilt. One veteran said that it was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for him. Lucy reminds us that our deserving veterans who meet the residency requirement need to be nominated for a quilt. This may be done by requesting a form from the RGV Quilt Guild or by filling in the online form that may found online at www.rgvqg.com/ forms.html.
