Celebrate Las Posadas All of our days should be special days. But if you are observing today as it is observed in Mexico, then this is a very, very special day. It is the day that most families in Mexico begin to celebrate Las Posadas. The word "posada" in Spanish translates to "inn" in English. Las Posadas then is the reenactment of Joseph and Mary searching for an inn where the Child Jesus could be born. Every night from December 15 until Christmas Eve, neighborhoods throughout Mexico will be celebrating Las Posadas. Fortunately, we live in a multi-cultural area where many of the families with roots in Mexico continue to carry on the tradition of celebrating Las Posadas. Traditionally, Las Posadas was celebrated for ten consecutive nights. In the United States, Las Posadas is sometimes celebrated only on one given night. Celebrating a posada is a neighborhood affair...a tradition in which the young and the old participate. The youngest often has a special perch riding on the shoulders of his daddy as family and neighbors walk behind Mary and Joseph. An angel may be leading the entire group. If a donkey is available Mary may be seated on the donkey that is led by Joseph. A special song is sung in Spanish by the participants as they walk from house to house asking for lodging. Time after time they are refused. Finally at a predetermined house they are admitted. Once admitted, the party begins - most often hot chocolate, cookies and tamales are offered to all. Perhaps for the young ones there will be a pinata filled with candies and treats. Hopefully you will be invited to participate in a Posada. Consider it an honor if you are invited to this special Christmas celebration. The experience will open your heart to the true meaning of Christmas.
