Volunteer opportunities at PVAS If you want to spend some time with animals, and help an organization out by doing so, Palm Valley Animal Society has plenty of volunteer opportunities for you. Every second Saturday of the month, PVAS hosts a vaccination clinic for pets out in the community called Community Clinic. Veterinarians stop by the shelter to help provide vaccines to keep pets in the community happy and healthy. PVAS serves roughly 150 dogs and cats out in the Rio Grande Valley. The Community Clinic is one of the largest volunteer events hosted monthly and they are in urgent need of help and is usually held at the Laurie P. Andrews Center (2451 N. US Exp. 281, Edinburg). Volunteer duties include assisting in the direction and flow of client traffic and parking; escorting pets into and out of the clinic; pet handling; checking in and checking out clients; assistance in coordination and flow of the event inside and outside of the clinic; and other duties. Clerical help is also needed. PVAS needs help in preparing for the Community Clinics held. They usually hold this volunteer opportunity a day or two in advance of the clinic. Those volunteering can expect to prepare client check-in packets, final touches to the clinic preparation, and more. Weekly, PVAS has a Foster Wellness Clinic at the Laurie P. Andrews Center. Shifts for this are available every Saturday. The clinic is held to ensure that the pets out in foster care are happy and healthy along with receiving their needed vaccinations. Volunteer duties include checkin foster pets; assist foster staff in clinical tasks; vaccinate pets (under supervision and assistance); guide foster parents inside and out of the clinic; take pets in and out of the clinic; and discussing checkups with foster parents. Another opportunity is PVAS’s adoption events. They host adoption events at area stores like Petco on a regular basis and could use help with several things. Volunteer duties include loading and unloading pets; setting up table and tabling materials; speaking to the public and PVAS; and distribution of flyers and materials. You can sign up to become a volunteer at https://mailchi.mp/ pvastx/volunteer-registration. If you have any questions, call PVAS at (956) 686-1141.
