Why learn about migrating birds? In North America there are 338 bird species listed as Nearctic-Neotropical migrants. Of those 338 species, 333 of them have been documented in Texas. This means that of the 615 species of birds recorded in Texas (the highest record of any other state), about 54% of them are Nearctic-Neotropical migratory birds. The Rio Grande Valley is considered to be one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America.TheLRGVhasyearlong growing seasons and is locatedbetweenfourconvergingclimatesresultinginmoreplantandwildlifediversity.Duringmigrationbirdswill follow specific routes also known as flyways. These routes run north to south and include the Atlanticoceanic route, the Atlantic Flyway, the Mississippi Flyway, the Central Flyway, the PacificFlyway, and the Pacific oceanic route. The Central and Mississippi flywaymerge intheLRGV making the Rio Grande Valley a safehavenforthesemigratingbirds. Migratorybirdsprovidenumerous ecosystemservicessuchaspestcontrol,plantpollination,serveasfood sourceforotherwildlife,andattract millionsofbirdersandnatureenthusiasts from all over the world. Working for the Santa AnaNational Wildlife Refuge right along the banks of the Rio Grande River,Urban Park Ranger Thamara Hernandez, has a very importantresponsibility to maintain therefugefor these magnificent migratory birds on their incrediblejourneys.ARioGrande Valley native Thamara grew up in SanJuan.Herpassionfortheenvironmentandconservationwas instilled early on by her family who worked in agriculture fields. She learnedfirsthandall thehardwork thatgoesintomaintainingahealthy environment. Through her role as UrbanParkRanger, Thamarahas played an active role in educating hercommunityontheimportanceof protectingandconservingthenaturalhabitatoftheRioGrandeValley.
