The event starts Wednesday with some indoor events that evening and goes through to the weekend. More information can be found online at www. spikitefest.com or visit their event page on Facebook. Next week, also at the Island, is Leslie Blasing’s WinterFest and Expo. She is supporting the local food pantry by collecting donations of canned foods. It will probably be the second day of February - or perhaps even later - when you read this. Already a whole month has flown by. January is gone and February is here. And yes, time did just fly by. Spring is just around the corner. Spring is one of my most favorite times of the year. Spring is like a new beginning. The mesquite trees come into full leaf with their soft, buttery yellow blossoms and light emerald green leaves. Wildflowers will soon be bursting into bloom with bright spots of yellow, red, purple, and even blue splashes of color. Farmers will watch for just the right time to plant the vegetables, grain, and cotton. Now is the right time to think about a Sunday afternoon drive down Highway 281 affectionately known as the Military Highway and at one time the only road running East and West and parallel to the Rio Grande River. Oh, if that road could talk. Just imagine how the Oblate Fathers pushed and pulled their pump organ as they moved from ranch to ranch administering Biblical teachings to the settlers. In the mid 1700’s the highway was just a dusty, sandy road that became a wet, muddy road after every rain...a road just waiting for another hapless victim to get stuck. In the 1800’s Zachary Taylor moved his troops up this same road and even established temporary headquarters at a ranch near Santa Maria. Today you will drive on a paved road through fields of sugar cane, onions and other vegetable crops that grow profusely in the rich alluvial soil left by the years of flooding from the Rio Grande River. Why not take a Farm Tour and learn more about the area? We are rich in history. We enjoy a multicultural heritage that influences our food, our music, and our customs. Why let time fly by while we stand still? It’s time to get out and enjoy our time in this paradise. Let’s go a’ traveling. sert. If you did not get one, the survey is also available online on our website. This very important research is used Valley-wide by both businesses and communities to help make very important decisions that impact the Winter Texan community. By completing and returning your survey before the deadline you will help ensure the Winter Texan Survey results reflect the most accurate picture of the Winter Texan population and the positive impact Winter Texans have on the Rio Grande Valley. “All information provided will be kept confidential. The data will be tabulated, and only statistical information will be made public in the final report,” said Dan Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times. The easiest way to complete the survey is online. Winter Texan Times has created an easy-to-use web form and there is a link to it on the home page of our website at www.WinterTexanTimes.com. All completed survey forms received by Feb. 28 will be entered in the drawing, including those completed online. Online submissions are preferred. Only one survey per household will be permitted.
