LJISD Folklorico celebrates 40 years The La Joya ISD Folklorico program is celebrating their 40th anniversary by holding three performances this weekend. The La Joya High School Grupo Folklorico “Tabasco” and Mariachi “Los Coyotes” presents: Orgullo y Tradicion 2022. There will be several styles of music and dances representing different areas of Mexico. Conjunto music will also be heard at the event. The program will also showcase La Joya High School senior Mellanie Olivares, who won the Best U.S. Grand Champion Vocalist award at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in December. Performances will be held on Saturday, February 12 at 1 and 5 p.m.; and Sunday, February 13 at 1 p.m. All performances will be held at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center, 604 N. Coyote Drive, in La Joya. Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance on Thursday or Friday or at the door about 90 minutes before show time. All tickets are general admission. Tickets are $8. Valley-Wide Kansas Day celebration held Submitted by Larry Schmitt and Jan Bergman On January 26, two hundred ten Kansans from various Parks/Resorts throughout the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s 161st year admission to the Union, January 29, 1861. It was so great for we Kansans to be together again, and the old-timers enjoyed meeting the thirty-three Kansans attending for the first time…. yay!!! As before, Trophy Gardens RV Resort is a great venue for this size of crowd. Ballis Catering of Mission served a delicious sit-down, plated meal at noon. Comments on the food and service were ultra-complimentary. Rusty Rierson, home grown entertainer from Augusta, KS provided the entertainment. Rusty delighted the Kansas crowd with jokes, songs he composed and many all-time favorites. Jan Bergman, Chair of the event and Larry Schmitt, C ommu n i - cations and R e s e r v a - tions, facilitated the day’s events. No event of this size can occur without impressive Volunteers.
