Young titled “No time to see it all, but you can try.” We know our seasonal visitors aim at visiting Valley sites while here, and we also know, from the work we do with our RGV Visitors Guide, that we have a lot of interesting places to see. The article talks about several top sites to see in the Valley, and I will recap some of those here. We hope you take some time to visit the local sites and enjoy the history and locales the Rio Grande Valley has to offer. Young states that he personally enjoys crossing the river at the Los Ebanos Ferry, west of Mission and La Joya. He goes on to mention the Hidalgo County Historical Museum (now the Museum of South Texas History-MOSTH), McAllen International Museum (now International Museum of Arts and Science-IMAS), and the Gladys Porter Zoo. “If I had to choose a few places to visit, I would begin with the Confederate Air Force Museum,” says Young. In 1987, the museum was located at Harlingen’s International Airport. Today, the museum is located at the historic Port Isabel – Cameron County Airport in Los Fresnos. The museum features eight flying Winter Texan Times: Looking back 35 years So many sites to see WWII aircraft; numerous vintage, operational ground and support vehicles, and artifacts – most of which have been provided by South Texas families. At the museum, you can take a tour through the many displays from the preludes to war in Asia and Europe, to the fall of the Third Reich and the defeat of the Japanese Empire. You’ll see it all through the eyes of our country’s heroes. Museum volunteers can conduct group tours outside regular museum hours on request – so if you get a group that wants to go, call them and see what can be scheduled. General admission is free, but donations are accepted. The rate for group tours of 10 or more will be $5 per attendee. 3 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com OCTOBER 26, 2022 Get ready for the Annual RGV Birding Festival Put the dates of November 9-13 on your calendar for the upcoming Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. And you might want some extra days before or after to continue adding birds to your list, your memory card, or just your memory. The Valley is always full of colorful birds, friendly people, and plenty of birders. Throw in a few tacos here and there, and you have a Fiesta. The festival will offer over 120 field trips for the five days, keynote speakers, afternoon presentations, a rousing trade show (called Birders Bazaar), a silent auction, a souvenir booth, and the fabulous art and photographs from local students. Come reunite with birders from across the country – seeing old friends and making new ones. Be sure to plan your trip to arrive on Tuesday to attend the Welcome Reception Tuesday evening. There will be music, noshes, and sips. Watch the website for more information about the event. Check out the updated 2022 schedule online for the latest information regarding field trips, photo track, keynotes, and seminars, as well as an array of special events. Online registration is currently open, but closes at the end of the day October 28, and events are filling up fast. While everyone who participates pays a registration fee, visitors/participants have the option of purchasing a Kiskadee Pass – an all-event pass that gets you into the talks – during online registration for a savings or buying tickets separately at the door. All field trips are priced according to entry fees/vehicles used/number of guides allotted. There are many field trip offerings to choose from, with trips going to the traditional spots, and as always, some new trips added for return visitors. Special trips in the field with featured speakers to further enhance their presentations will be super exciting. With the coast about 30 miles away, hints of the Chihuahuan Desert only two hours to the west, and the ribbon of the Rio Grande to our south, there is a lot of habitats and a huge diversity of birds to offer. Field trips include Laguna Madre, Arroyo Colorado, Bahia Grande, Bentsen-RGV State Park, bird banding, birding for new birders, Boca Chica, Cactus Creek, butterflies, Quinta Mazatlan, Estero Llano Grande, King Ranch, wetlands, Laguna Atascosa, Port Isabel, parrots, Port Mansfield, and many of the other local hotspots, parks, and refuges. If you have questions, feel free to call the registration office at (209) 227-4823 or visit the website at rgvbf.org. Black Bellied Whistling Duck

Breathe Easy with Colair The migration and plight of the Monarch If you have been doing any car travel recently, you are no doubt experiencing a different kind of roadkill. You have probably noticed on your car’s grill work the remains of the orange-colored wings and bodies of the Monarch Butterfly. Those remains really make a mess on the front or our cars. How sad it is that so many of these beautiful migrating butterflies will never reach their wintering sanctuary in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. The Monarchs that migrate through the Rio Grande Valley begin their migration east of the Rockies in northern Canada traveling over 3000 miles to reach the pine and oak clad mountains in Mexico. Some even migrate as far as Northern South America. Their average speed of six miles per hour makes this flight long and tiring. En route, many will die. The Monarch Butterfly reproduces through a system of metamorphosis. When in the pupa - or the caterpillar stage, the Monarch feeds on the milk weed. The adult will also feed upon the milkweed but also on nectar of other plants. The milkweed ingested by the butterfly and stored in their stomach has a very bitter taste when ingested by a predator. It also contains a property that acts much like digitalis. Even though this property doesn’t seem to really hurt the Monarch, birds and other predators that prey upon the Monarch will die if they ingest the stomach of the Monarch. It is said that many of these predators have learned to eat only the wings of the Monarch. Mother Nature has done her best to protect this beautiful creature with distinctive orange, black and white markings. Even so the Monarch has recently been placed on the red list and is in danger of extinction. Naturalists estimate that the Monarch Butterfly may be extinct in 20 years unless we can do something to stop this decline. But what can we do? Unfortunately, the Monarch has many enemies - all too many are of the human variety. Herbicides used by farmers have destroyed much of the food supply, and illegal lumbering in Mexico has destroyed much of the pine and oak forests where the Monarchs winter. Roadkill also takes its toll. In addition, good intentioned naturalists have decided to help replenish the number lost by establishing butterfly nurseries. Unfortunately, a parasitic bacteria spreads quickly through these nurseries and is carried on the wings of the butterflies when they are released into the wild. A nursery bred butterfly is also not as strong as those raised in the wild. Plus, their navigational system used to reach their winter sanctuary is not as strong. The warm sunshine found in the sanctuaries warms the wings of the butterfly. Unless the wings are warmed, the butterfly cannot fly to find food and water. Perhaps the best thing we can do would be to plant milkweed or plan a butterfly garden that offers food to our migrating friends. If you would like to learn more about the Monarch, why not attend the Hallowings Butterfly Festival on Saturday, October 29 at the World Birding Center on South Padre Island. The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be extra activities that will interest the youngsters. Best of all admission is free. Weslaco, TX 78596 IMAS recognizes local talent in Juried Art Show The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is hosting its 2nd Annual Members’ Juried Art Show currently on display through the end of December. The exhibition was juried by Diane Milliken Garza, Ph.D. Executive Director, Brownsville Community Foundation Commissioner, Texas Commission on the Arts and features original artwork submitted by IMAS members. The work of 90 local member artists can be viewed now through December 31 in the Cardenas Gallery of the IMAS. “It is such an incredible feeling to help with this project; being able to see our community’s involvement and supporting art in the Rio Grande Valley. The works of our participating artists hold such unique perspectives and efforts that deserve to be admired,” said Celina Michel, Exhibitions Coordinator. “We look forward to future Members’ Juried Show exhibits, as these events will not only provide our community with a safe space to express their ideas to their neighbors, but also a chance to have an open dialogue and get to learn about each other.” Awards were given to the following member artists for their work in the show: Best in Show – Berry Fritz “Tufted Titmouse,” second Place – Josue Rawmirez “Fringe World on Fire,” third Place – Irma Garza Garcia “Inferno,” and three Honorable Mentions – Noreen Graf “Frida,” Maribel Barrera “Self Portrait,” and Erick B. Salazar “Bananas.” “It was an honor to be asked to jury the IMAS’ second member’s art show. Over one hundred works of art, by ninety member artists, were submitted. Beautiful, varied, thoughtful, meaningful, inspired are some of the adjectives I would use to describe the collection of works,” said Diane Milliken Garza, this year’s juror. “When you support local art, be it by a gallery purchase or your attendance at an exhibit, such as this one at IMAS, you support local art culture. Our community is reflected in our local art. The exchange between artist and audience sends out unique positive impacts. It helps us understand and empathize with one another and cultivates our local identity as a community. It is a powerful thing.” To visit the exhibit or to purchase or renew a membership, call (956) 681-2800 during business hours or visit the IMAS website to register online. May 15 was proclaimed “Wanda Lambert Boush Day” in Alamo during a city meeting to honor Wanda Boush. The day named marked her 100th birthday. Many friends came to the May 3 Alamo City Commission meeting for the issuance of the special proclamation by Mayor Diana Martinez expressing pride in honoring the long-time resident of the Alamo Rose RV Resort. Boush, who has had a great love for the outdoors and traveling the world, was born May 15, 1922. She began traveling to Alamo from the Chicagoland area with her husband, Edward, as a winter visitor. They became winter visitors in 1985 as charter members of the then new Alamo Rose Park. She and Edward were married in in 1942 and shared 51 years of marriage until his death in 1993. She became a permanent resident in 1997. Over the years Boush has volunteered with helping several organizations, including the RGV Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, the RGV Valley Symphony, the UTRGV Music Department and the Museum of South Texas History. Boush, who has a love for furry creatures, especially cats, having had nine of them, uses her creative endeavors to write poems and an annual Christmas newsletter. The spry centenarian was named “Citizen of the Year” in 2019 by the Alamo Chamber of Commerce. The selection called attention to her dedication for the welfare of others and animals, earning her the respect and affection of people of all ages. A party was held for her at the RV park in April before most of the Winter Texans headed north out of the Valley. She was also recognized by those at the park during its weekly “donut time.” Boush was also honored at Alamo’s 10th Annual Watermelon Festival where attendees sang Happy Birthday to her.
