This year’s Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade will be held on Saturday, January 28 at 12 p.m. in Mission. There will also be a fun fair on Saturday, January 28, and Sunday, January 29 beginning at 10 a.m. on both days. The parade usually runs on Conway Winter Texan Times: Looking back 35 years Ave. in Mission, from 495 to downtown Mission. Texas Citrus Fiesta used to have a Winter Texan Fun Day during the month of January – the fun fair used to run for at least a week during the month preceding the parade. This event had games and other special events just for Winter Texans. During our first year of publication, the Winter Texan Times featured The King and Queen that were selected at the Fun Day event. The 1988 King and Queen were Ed and Gladys Splittstoesser of Wintergreen Estates. Also, during the event, they held several contests. Winners were chosen for best quilt, cake decorating, oil painting, watercolor painting, crocheted afghan, knitted afghan, woodcarving, hat contest, and more. There were sports awards given for pool, horseshoes, shuffleboard, bowling, and others. The entertainment that year was the El Valle Del Sol Cloggers. They were said to be “A colorful and lively group” that the crowd really enjoyed. There was also a prize given for best grapefruit pie – something that was a big thing at the Texas Citrus Fiesta. Over the years, Winter Texan parks have sponsored floats, have had their king and queen ride in golf carts, and helped with the product costume show and other Texas Citrus Fiesta events. These days, events are held throughout the year, not just during the month of January, or in the fall when they have the Princess Anna contest. The Texas Citrus Fiesta now sponsors a Vaquero Cook-Off that is usually held in November, a Veterans Parade, a golf tournament, the gala, royal coronation, product costume show, and a few other events. Today, the Texas Citrus Fiesta is still a fun filled day for all who attend. There is plenty for everyone. If you would like to register for this year’s parade, there is still time to do so until January 23rd. Call (956) 5859724 for more information. Bentsen Palm RV Park in 2015 TCF Parade. Kanabec County, MN Residents All Kanabec County, Minnesota See REUNIONS pg. 26 By Kathy Olivarez For the first time since covid hit the Valley, the very popular group, Goldwing Express has returned to perform. The group consists of Irishman, Bobby Baldridge, who was referred to in the show as Pop, or, “white man,” and two of his three Indian sons, Steven and Paul, who towered over him. Shawn, a former favorite with crowds, was unable to come. The group started coming to the Valley 12 years ago, and was very popular with Winter Texans who favored their combination of comedy, country, bluegrass and gospel music. They won several Rio Grande Valley Fame Awards. During covid, when music shows came to a standstill, they got trucking licenses and traveled the roads of America, delivering covid vaccines. It was not until 2021 when they got a call from “Shepherd of the Hills” in Branson that they were able to return to doing what they love the most, singing and entertaining at the venue’s bluegrass and barbeque shows. “You don’t know what it means to us to be back,” said Steven Balderidge who emceed the show. “We really missed traveling and doing shows, and we love to come to the Rio Grande Valley. We will be all over the Valley until January 26 but will be leaving to catch our fifth annual cruise out of Galveston on the Carnival Vista on January 28.” After greetings to old friends in the audience Pop started the show, playing mandolin and singing, “Home Sweet Home.” Ever a jokester, he told the audience the flowers in front of the stage reminded him of what his wife called him, “a bloomin’ idiot!” Steven told the audience the group considered the Rio Grande a second home and it’s been good to them. He played the banjo and dobro during the show while Paul played guitar. They performed songs such as “Music City Lights Keep on Shining on Me.” Pop sang “I Wonder How the Old Folks Are at Home.” Steven sang, “Two Graves on Hillside.” The songs were mixed with bluegrass instrumental medleys where they made unique sounds with their instruments. According to Steven, one of the songs, “Specklebird,” was a favorite on the Grand Ole Opry and was played there many times. Then they moved to their Indian heritage with “Old White Man,” a humorous comedy sketch including feathered war bonnets. They asked the audience what a mama buffalo said to her son before he went to college. Bison was the answer. They ended that segment with a song entitled, “Full Blooded Half Breed.” During the second half of the show, they turned to gospel music with “Sing Me Back Home,” a song about a prisoner about to meet his doom, who asked the warden to allow his friend to sing his favorite hymn during his execution. Another was about a man who met his fate driving on a country road, calling his mother to let her know everything was alright and he was with Jesus. Goldwing will be returning to Branson at the end of March and can be found at Shepherd of the Hills until December 31. Goldwing Express Returns to Valley Goldwing Express. Photo by Greg Uhrbrock

See EVENTS pg. 26 By Kathy Olivarez For those who loved the music of Neal Diamond during their youth, singer Ralph Kuster has put together a show featuring the best of Diamond’s music from his many albums such as “Cracklin’ Rosie,” which tells the story of two fellows sharing bottle of a cheap wine and lamenting their lost loves. The show debuted Saturday, January 14, at Mission Bell Resort. Other Diamond songs were in a totally different tone such a “He Ain’t Heavy; He’s My Brother.” Kuster used a background screen with pictures and showed a young boy carrying a smaller boy in his arms in the background as he sang. Kuster decided to develop the tribute show because Diamond was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018 and can no longer tour. He describes Diamond as a deep-thinking man with religious roots that comes out in his music in a variety of ways. “Shilo” was based on Diamond’s visitation to a Jewish retreat near Jerusalem where soldiers go to rest and relax and center themselves again after a battle. “Soolaimon” was written after Diamond’s trip to Kenya, where he went on safari. Shots of lions, zebras and many other African animals are shown on the screen as Kuster sings. In “Heartlight,” Diamond encouraged his fans to let the love in their hearts show. Kuster used scenes from the movie “ET,” where Eliot and his friends rescue ET, the alien from outer space, and help him return home, avoiding capture by the government men who wanted to trap him and study him. Diamond also wrote a number of fun songs in a romantic genre that are memorable. “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “Cherry, Cherry” are examples. Kuster said Diamond was once asked which of his many songs he would put in a time capsule for future generations to know about his music. “Cherry, Cherry” was one of them. The other was “I Am…I Said.” Songs like “September Morn” where two former lovers reunite, and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore,” have a more poignant theme. On the album, Diamond sang a duet with Barbra Streisand. Both were from Brooklyn and went to the same high school but did not know each other then. Kuster sang medleys with parts of Diamond’s favorite songs. Other times he sang the entire song. No show would be complete without the all-time favorite of many, “Sweet Caroline.” Kuster ended his show singing the song with the audience swaying and calling out “So Good, So Good!” The audience enjoyed the walk down memory lane as Kuster sang the favorites of the favorite performer of their youth, Neil Diamond! Kuster will be participating in Gospelfest, a charity event to be held at Fun N’ Sun Resort, 1400 Zillock Road in San Benito on Tuesday, February 7, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. He explained there is no set admission. The event is to raise funds for charities The committee selects the charity. Often there are three different charities, one for each hour of the event. The Neil Diamond Tribute Show can be seen again on Wednesday, February 1, at Paradise Resort Estates in Pharr at 7 p.m. Ralph Kuster has new Neil Diamond Tribute Show Ralph Kuster.
