We had a crazy week last week. We were so thrilled at the showing at the 12th Annual Valley Star Awards. It was so nice to see so many faces out at the event, some familiar, a lot of new ones. We had a blast seeing our six performers and finding out who the winners were. The crowd cheered as winners were announced and laughed, clapped and danced while the entertainers were performing. It was loud and tons of fun. We can’t wait until next year. We already have a great show planned and always hope we do better each year. We learn as we go and hope that we only get bigger each year. On to other things…. We have enjoyed the season so far and there isn’t much of it left. It’s amazing how fast the season has gone. Now we are starting our golf course contest. We invite all of our golfers to participate in this. We know how much you enjoy playing golf while in the Valley and we look forward to seeing who you By Kathy Olivarez From the naming of the winners of the eight categories of awards, to the selection of great Wintertainers™ who performed in the show, the Valley Star Awards held Wednesday, February 15, was a great success. Each spring we ask our readers to vote for their favorite gold courses. The Valley has many courses to choose from, and Winter Texans seem to try to catch them all while visiting the Valley. In 2015, Phyllis Tillotson asked Vonnie Jones if she would bake a rhubarb pie to sell at Palm Gardens RV Park’s annual park auction. It was the first time a pie was sold at the auction. There was a bidding war for the pie between Phyllis and Roger Jacobs. Roger ultimately got the pie with a $55 bid. As events were planned for the following year, it was decided to add a Pie Auction to our calendar and donate the money to local charities. Phyllis and her husband Kermit came to Palm Gardens in 2004 from Mound View, Kansas and fell in love with the park and its residents. Phyllis was active in the park, playing cribbage every chance she had, spoiling her cat and Kermit’s dog Jack, doing blood pressure checks at the weekly Koffee Klatch, helping out wherever needed, and making the best lasagna (according to their daughter). Oh yes, and she loved pies! Phyllis passed away in 2018. In recognition of Phyllis’ involvement in the park and that she first suggested selling a pie at our auction, the pie auction became the Phyllis Tillotson Memorial Pie Auction and is held every year in her memory. This year the park sold a variety of pies and cakes, including Vonnie Jones’ rhubarb pie, and we raised $2,580 for charities and residents enjoyed some delicious desserts. Over the past several years, we have made donations to the following charities with the proceeds from our pie auctions: Boys and Girls Club, Humane Society, Loaves and Fishes, Stuart Place School Hosting, and Valley Haven. Golf Survey Begins It is that time of year again. It is time to vote for your favorite golf course. We do this every Spring, when the weather is just right to get out on the courses again. You have three weeks to let us know what your favorite golf course is. By filling out the survey, you could win free rounds of golf and other prizes. You can fill out the form in today’s edition of the Winter Texan Times (or the next two issues) or fill out the form online at www.wintertexantimes.com. All entries must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15. So, over the next three weeks, we would like you to try out a new course, or two or three, and then let us know about your favorites in our golf course survey. We would like to solicit additional feedback for our wrap up story. And if you would, attach a short note to your ballot, telling us why you voted the way you did. We would love to hear your thoughts, your stories, and any duffers anecdotes you would like to share.

In celebration of what would have been Ramírez’s 100th birthday, the exhibit will feature parts of the Al Ramírez Collection. A true renaissance man, Ramírez was a veteran of World War II, a champion for bilingual education and the first Mexican American mayor of Edinburg. He also ran a publishing company, Nuevo Santander Press. His family understood the significance of his contributions to the community and, over the years, donated a large collection of artifacts, documents and photographs. The spotlight exhibit’s run is through February 26. This exhibit is included in the regular museum admission fees. Museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the exhibit, please contact Collections and Exhibits Coordinator Melissa Peña at (956) 383-6911 or mjpena@ mosthistory.org. 7 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com FEBRUARY 22, 2023 RIO GRANDE VALLEY LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO MARCH 9-19 IT’S time! The production will run on February 23 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and will include a matinee at 2 p.m. on February 26. Performances will take place at STC’s Cooper Center for the Performing Arts Black Box Theater at 3200 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. In George Orwell’s classic, the animals on a farm drive out their master and take over and run the farm for themselves. The experiment is successful, except that someone has to take the deposed farmer’s place. Leadership devolves upon the pigs, which are cleverer than the rest of the animals. Unfortunately, their character is not equal to their intelligence. “Animal Farm continues to be a classic story and one which I believe is still relevant today,” said Joel Jason Rodriguez, the play’s director. “I wanted to direct this play for some time, and I am happy we were able to include it this season. I believe the audience will appreciate our approach to this production when they see it.” General admission tickets cost $5. Seating is limited due to the capacity of the black box studio so advanced purchases are encouraged. Tickets can be purchased online at www.southtexascollege.edu/go/theatre. For additional information about the show, special accommodations, or for group rates, call (956) 872-2301 or email jleal5@southtexascollege.edu.

This year, we wanted to delve into the history of our Valley golf courses. We hope you enjoy this bit of history and learning about the courses you visit and love. For the next three weeks we will feature a different part of the Valley. This week we will feature the Lower Valley gold courses. Valley International Country Club Golf in the Rio Grande Valley has a long tradition, tracing back to the mid-1840s when it is reported that soldiers from Fort Brown introduced the sport to what was then known as Brownsville Country Club – now named Valley International Country Club. Over the years, the sport grew and the names to graze VICC included not just the best from the Valley, such as Al Escalante and Tony Butler, but also Jimmy Demaret and Hall-of-Famer Ben Hogan. In the 1930s, the city and VICC hosted a driving contest. “It was an GOLF From pg. 1 era when Brownsville was coming up in the golfing world. The game was so popular that the city had its own practice driving range located across the street from “The Terrace,” a miniature golf course on the main street of the city, West Elizabeth,” wrote Rene Torres in the Port Isabel Press. Because of VICC and the overwhelming popularity of the sport, Brownsville started its first high school golf program. Now, VICC holds tournaments, corporate outings and is open to the public and offers an 18-hole championship course as well as a nine-hole executive course. The championship course is demanding but tries to offset that with four sets of tees to ensure beginners can enjoy their round. The short course allows golfers to work on their short game and have a quicker round. By the way, Brownsville High School athlete Charles Puckett won the contest with a 226-yard drive. Mrs. Works won the girls event with a drive of 129 yards. Rancho Viejo Golf and Country Club Driving through the little community and golf paradise known as Rancho Viejo can conjure up visions of what life was like many years ago. There’s a reason for that since the community and town originated before the United States officially existed. Golf wasn’t there, but the close-knit community along the Texas Coast was an idea as early as 1770. Ownership of more than 260,000 acres changed hands multiple times throughout the decades. Then, in 1968, Bill Bass purchased 280 acres to develop the Rancho Viejo Resort and Country Club. The community incorporated and the golf course and resort became home to golfers, retirees, vacationers, and a general population. Its beauty didn’t change. Today, the “golf ball in the sky,” represents one of the most beautiful golf courses in South Texas. Filled with resacas, native vegetation and sitting in between Harlingen and Brownsville, the town and its offerings are filled with splendor. Designed by Dennis W. Arp, El Diablo golf course is playable yet challenging, stretching over 6,800 yards from the back tees. Course construction began in 1971 on where used to lie a citrus orchard and was named El Diablo (the devil) because the grapefruit trees lining the fairways made it so devilishly difficult to play. The course’s greens are known to be some of the fastest in South Texas. El Diablo has hosted the PGA Tour Qualifying School for Curtis Strange, Craig Stadler and Peter Jacobson. River Bend Golf Course, Brownsville It’s nature’s paradise. A course considered by many to be the most unique in the Valley, River Bend and nature co-exist. Once a private golf course, new ownership opened it up, and area golfers will drive farther to play this course and make a day out of it. “When I first started working there, I played hole No. 4 and I thought I was in the hill country,” Adrian Garcia said. “There are oak trees and the fairway dipped and then there was an elevated green. “I thought, ‘What the heck is going on? I thought I was in Brownsville’.” Garcia’s reaction is not rare. Since the course opened to the public, the reviews are raving from both those Brownsville Golf Center.
