It’s been a welcome sight for a lot of people and Valley farmers, but I am sure it has made a lot of people stay inside as well when they would rather be out and about. My father, who lives by Wagon City North and Rollin Homes Park, has recorded nearly three inches of rain (2.8 to be exact) for this past weekend. He was still getting rain on Monday, but it was light. We were driving about Sunday and were noticing all of the standing water on streets, that wasn’t there when we passed by the same area just two hours before. Hopefully the state is in a better drought position now after these days of seemingly never-ending rain. Most of the outdoor Veterans Day ceremonies were cancelled, rescheduled, or taken indoors because of the weather. So glad to see photos of the events that still took place. Look inside to see the City of Mission’s Veterans Day ceremonies that have been rescheduled for this coming weekend. NOVEMBER 15, 2023 www.wintertexantimes.com 10 WINTER TEXAN TIMES McAllen Holiday Parade organizers recently announced details of road closures and the McAllen Holiday Parade Polar Express, the daylong free park and ride shuttle that is being provided by Metro McAllen on parade day, to help ensure the safety of the anticipated 265,000plus parade attendees, as well as the 1,200 parade participants and volunteers. Getting the family to the parade will not be difficult, as the City of McAllen, in partnership with South Texas College, will offer a free McAllen Holiday Parade Park and Ride Polar Express Shuttle from the STC campus on Pecan Boulevard and 29th St. to the Quince Avenue and 23rd Street parade Drop-Off/ Pick-Up point. Starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, Metro McAllen trolleys and buses will make a continuous loop approximately every 15 minutes, from the pick-up point at STC to the parade Drop-Off/Pick-Up point. The Park & Ride Polar Express Shuttle will run until 12 a.m. Wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers are welcome, as are service dogs. Both parking and the ride are free for everyone throughout the day. Organizers are reminding parade attendees that there will be multiple road closures around McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, the site of the parade step-off, beginning at noon the day of the parade. These road closures are designed to help parade participants arrive to the staging area safely and to avoid traffic congestion or accidents as hundreds of thousands of spectators make their way to the parade viewing area. “As the largest single day attendance event in the Rio Grande Valley, it is our priority to make sure that everyone arrives safely and on time to see the McAllen Holiday Parade,” said Joe Vera, McAllen AsMcAllen Holiday Parade talks safety for events sistant City Manager and Executive Producer of the event. “We ask everyone to take note of the road closures, pay attention to barriers and pedestrians and to take advantage of the free Polar Express that will get everyone to the parade site quickly and safely. Thanks to the many law enforcement partners who will be assisting with traffic control and other security details, we want to make sure that everyone has a fun and safe time at the parade,” concluded Vera. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade as a volunteer still has time to sign up as balloon handlers or banner carriers. Balloon handler volunteers must be 18 years or over, while banner carriers must be 16 years or over. All volunteers must go through a background check and will receive gloves, t-shirt, and snacks. SPECIAL! 7 Day Plus As the days grow shorter and cooler, pecan trees in Texas prepare for their annual debut. Leaves take on hues of amber and crimson, painting a breathtaking landscape that attracts visitors from near and far. Amidst this natural transformation, pecans reach peak maturity and are ready to break through their sturdy shells. In 1919, the pecan tree was named the state tree of Texas, thanks in large part to former Texas Governor James Stephen Hogg. On March 2, 1906, Hogg expressed his wish for a soft-shell Texas pecan tree to be planted at his grave with its nuts distributed to Texas farmers for planting. Years later, journalist Katie Daffan suggested the pecan tree become the state tree of Texas in Hogg’s honor. This idea quickly gained widespread support, leading the state legislature to unanimously pass a resolution formalizing the designation in 1919, which was reaffirmed eight years later during the 40th Texas Legislative Session. Pecans have deep cultural significance in Texas, dating back to prehistoric times when Native AmeriThe pecan tale of plenty cans would use them for currency, meals, and cooking. Even Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, the first European to traverse Texas, found solace in Texas pecans. Without these protein-rich nuts, he might not have survived the harsh winter of 1532. These deep Texas roots have led to the pecan’s increased prevalence in our state, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley and Hill Country. There, pecan orchards are carefully tended. Growers use labor-intensive techniques, including grafting and crossbreeding, to produce multiple varieties of the nut. Pecans are native to Texas’ river valleys and are the only commercially grown nut in the state. Each year, Texas farmers produce an average of nearly 45 million pounds of pecans. As a result of their hard work and bountiful harvesting, Texas ranks third in the nation for pecan production, making it a significant contributor to Texas’ booming agriculture industry. Today, pecans are a Lone Star staple used for everything from candies and cookies to barbecue, but nothing says “Texas” more sweetly than a pecan pie, which has become the star of many Thanksgiving tables. This beloved dessert is so cherished that it eventually earned the designation as the official state pie of Texas in 2013, reflecting its special place in Texans’ hearts. They may be a tough nut to crack, but pecans have become a source of pride and a taste of history that continues to flourish year after year. From tree to treat, our tradition of honoring and appreciating the historic Texas pecan will continue in the Lone Star State for generations to come. Texas Recycles Day has a rich history rooted in the Lone Star State. The event traces its origins to 1994 as a project of two employees of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Kevin Tuerff and Valerie Davis. Their idea was to promote recycling through a campaign to boost recycling in the state. What began as localized initiatives soon gained statewide momentum, leading to the formal establishment of Texas Recycles Day. Since then, every November, Texans celebrate and amplify recycling practices. A few years later, the effort went national, and much of the country celebrates “America Recycles Day” on November 15th. The event serves as a reminder of our responsibility to preserve the state’s natural beauty and promote a sustainable future. Through grassroots events including educational programs, community events, and collaborative partnerships, Texas Recycles Day continues to be a significant catalyst for environmental awareness and positive change. The City of McAllen Public Works Department will be celebrating Texas Recycles Day at the McAllen Recycling Center, (4101 N. Bentsen Rd.) on Saturday, November 18, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Every year the city celebrates the importance of recycling in Texas. The event attracts people from all over the Rio Grande Valley and encourages adjacent cities to participate in recycling practices in our community. The event is free to attend for everyone. While events and traditions may slightly vary, the central theme of the observance remains the same: to express gratitude to brave men and women for their dedication and valor. Two minutes of silence is observed at 11 a.m. on the 11th of November marking the end of World War I in remembrance of the fallen. This tradition serves as a poignant reminder of the courage, strength, and selflessness displayed by those who have served and those who continue to serve. In 1931, an act of Canada’s parliament changed the name of Armistice Day to Remembrance Day and in 1954, the U.S. Congress passed a bill to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day. On November 11, members of Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen, gathered to recognize and honor the Canadian and U.S. veterans in their park. They started with raising the Canadian and U.S. flags at 11 a.m. Residents gathered in the hall and were greeted by Paul (PJ) LaBarge who led them in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and O Canada. PJ shared information about Veterans Day and various wars our veterans have been involved in. He thanked our residents for their service. A display of the Fallen Soldier Table was set up. This is also known as the POW/MIA or Missing Man Table. Each item on the table represents the emotions and feelings reserved for those who did not come home. Ladies from the park’s quilt group presented the beautiful military service quilts they made for four of our veterans – Jerry Bradley, Roger Jacobs, Dianne Monk, and Kermit Tillotson. This is a tradition they have done for several years. The quilts are made possible by the generous donations of our residents for material and supplies and by the time and talent of our quilters. The celebration ended with lunch, cupcakes, and visiting with and thanking our veterans for their service. NOVEMBER 15, 2023 www.wintertexantimes.com 14 WINTER TEXAN TIMES (956)566-1157 Are you getting just a little bit excited? There are just so many wonderful celebrations this time of year. First it was Halloween and alongside that the Day of the Dead – a celebration of life observed all over Mexico and in a lot of south Texas communities. Then it is Veterans Day followed by Thanksgiving. And then comes Christmas – a favorite of so many. What a time for remembering and making new memories as families gather for the celebrations. My thoughts just naturally begin to think about my contributions to the celebrations – cooking a turkey for a big group comes first. Well, this year, it will be two turkeys as our group has grown to a probable thirty. Some kind gentleman at the grocery store saw me struggling to lift a 24 pound frozen turkey into the grocery cart. I just could not have managed without his help. He even helped me with the smaller one. My next big challenge is to determine where in the Rio Grande Valley I will find the best tamales, which is my big contribution to the Christmas Eve dinner. Have you ever tried to make tamales? This gringa – if you don’t speak Spanish, that’s an Anglo-Saxon term for white person – had never seen a tamale until I transferred to the Mexican border. Now I have even learned how to make them – and I had a very good teacher who was a retired chef from the Denver Country Club. First, of course, someone has to buy the corn husks and then put them to soak until they are very pliA wonderful time of year able. Then comes the challenge – on which side of the husk do you spread the masa? I had no idea there was a right and wrong side. Well, I soon learned. And then, of course, I never diced meat filling in small enough pieces. How patient my teacher was with me. Finally comes the folding of the leaf to make the package, placing it correctly in the cooking pot or even bundling the tamales into dozens to be frozen or refrigerated until the grand day when we all get to sample. Consider yourself lucky if you have a Mexican American friend who will invite you to a tamale making party- called a tamalada. Go, you will have a great time. 1,500 food baskets ahead of the holiday to pre-selected families across the city. The Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department will host a kick-off ceremony at 9 a.m. at 315 Mark S. Pena Drive before crews begin deliveries at 9:30 a.m. The community is encouraged to participate in Edinburg Cares in a number of ways. Residents can donate non-perishable items, such as canned fruits and vegetables, stuffing, and gravy mixes, now through Friday, November 17. Donation boxes can be found at the following locations: • Edinburg City Hall, 415 W. University Drive • Central Fire Station, 212 W. McIntyre Street • Edinburg Police Department, 1702 S.
