5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com DECEMBER 20, 2023 The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is proud to partner with the UTRGV Community Historical Archeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) to host its traveling exhibition “Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight”. This exhibition explores 50 million years of geological history and 15,000 years of cultural history in South Texas. Residents and visitors of the Rio Grande Valley may step over millions of years of history that included volcanic eruptions, 27-million-year-old petrified logs, 42-million-year-old giant oyster shells, and projectile points used by humans for over 12,000 years. “Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight” illuminates the unique landscape and helps curious minds to understand the natural processes that formed South Texas. “It’ll give people a good graphic and physical sense of what the natural and cultural historical foundations of this area are,” states Dr. Christopher L. Miller. “Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight” will be on display at the IMAS starting January 6, through March 31, 2024. See IMAS pg. 16 The Sandcastle Village at South Padre Island is always changing, but this time of year, you can find a big sand chair to take selfies on while visiting the Holiday Sandcastle Village. The village showcases the incredible talent of some of the best sand sculptors in the world. The Sandcastle Village changes with the season, and at this time of year, you can pay to have your message written on sand gift tags. You can walk through the sandcastle village for free, but they do take donations. Donations are used for the upkeep of the village, including live web cams and to help with Sandcastle Days that is held in early October each year. You can find the Holiday Sandcastle Village of SPI on Facebook or online at https://sandcastlevillage. com/. The village is located on West Ling St. under the Ferris Wheel. It is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Visit festive sandcastles at SPI Willie Elfson carved by Joris Kivits.
