Now we are preparing for the new year that is just around the corner. What do you do for New Year’s? Do you make a New Year’s Eve resolution? Do you take a moment to remember the good things that happened to you this past year? Do you share your happiness with others and have a gathering with friends? We would like to know and share your New Year’s Eve moments in photos and words. We don’t have much of any plans this year, and we really haven’t for a few years. Sometimes we get together with friends, but we hardly ever last until midnight anymore. We sometimes watch New Year’s Eve celebrations on TV, and we have caught a fireworks show a few times in the past 10 years or so, but not nearly as much as we used to. I think it’s partly because we don’t recoup the day after as well as before, and because our kids are grown and have their own things now – and only one of them is still home with us. While pickleball has been rising in popularity, Shuffleboard is still a game enjoyed by many Winter Texans. Shuffleboard did slow down a few years ago, but it is making a huge come back and shufflers are shuffling once again. According to an article we published last year, new shufflers are coming in at a rate not seen in many years. See SHUFFLEBOARD pg. 14 RGV Shuffleboard Association welcomes players, new and old Shuffleboard Tournament at Ranchero Village, 2020. Photo by Carina Brunson Tripp’s legacy lives on through Winter Texans and Elks By Barb Zanetti Photos by Dennis Zanetti Winter Texan Tripp Wright loved Christmas celebrations for children, especially for those who were disadvantaged. Three years ago, he begged leaders of his McAllen’s Elk Lodge 1402 to host a party for them. The parameters of his Christmas wish were simple: Offer disadvantaged children a wonderful party. And, by the way, make it a yearly affair. Oh … and you’ll need to make it bigger and better every year. It was his dream. His hope. And now it has become his legacy thanks to dedicated Elk members and a See TRIPP pg. 12 2024 Three Santas, one suit The Santa suit that Winter Texan Wally Ostrowski wore is Tripp’s… the one worn at the very first McAllen Elks Lodge party. It, too, is the same suit that Mark Norman wore last year when he was the “Tripp’s Christmas Village” Santa. Next to Wally his wife Jolan is wearing Maggie’s Mrs. Santa outfit. Last year it was worn by Carol Norman when her husband Mark played Santa.

These words seem the way residents of Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen live their lives, but even more so during the holidays. Residents find fun ways to give to others. When our Bingo Bros were looking for ways to make our Tuesday night Bingo games more fun, they also hit on an idea to help others. If you brought a non-perishable item to one of our recent Bingo games, you received an extra card and Loaves and Fishes received items to add to their food pantry. Loaves and Fishes has been around since 1991 when they recognized the need for assisting families in Harlingen and Upper Cameron County and started the local food pantry. They are part of the Feeding America Nationwide Network which distributes 4.3 billion meals each year. On a chilly November afternoon, ladies from the park got together to share friendship and hot apple cider and make some yarn Santa Clauses. When the ladies ventured out for their December Ladies Luncheon, they started at Jason’s Deli, where they enjoyed a delicious lunch. They then stopped by Valley View Senior Living Center to do some Christmas caroling and drop off the yarn Santa Clauses. Hopefully, the Santas will brighten the residents’ rooms for the holidays. Not sure who enjoyed the visit more, the residents of Palm Gardens or the Valley View residents! Everyone seemed to have a smile on their face when we left. Since residents started returning to Palm Gardens this fall, they have been collecting teddy bears. We ended up with a total of 114 bears which were recently dropped off at the Harlingen Police Department. Police officers will carry the bears in their vehicles and give them to children that are going through a difficult situation. We’re sure the bears will put a smile on the children’s faces and let them know someone cares about them. Teddy bears are already being collected to donate in the spring. I’m sure many of you have heard about or even have had an Advent calendar. It’s from the German word “Adventskalender” and is used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. Typically, the calendars have a little door or box that number down to Christmas. Each door or box leads to candy or a small toy or gift. By now you’ve probably also heard of the Reverse Advent Calendar. It tells you to donate or give something each day – giving instead of getting. Members of the park used a Reverse Advent Calendar that listed a food item to be donated each day. We ended up with over 20 boxes of food that were donated to the food pantry at the Damien Center in Harlingen. As you can see, the past two months have been busy at Palm Gardens giving to others, but you can be sure it was all done with a great deal of love. Submitted by Judy Haken, Activity Director Everyone at Casa Del Valley knows Christmas is in the air when the Giving Tree goes up in the front office. Decorated with tags inscribed with names, gender and gift information, residents can choose a tag (or two) from the tree. They then purchase a gift and return the wrapped gift to be placed under the Giving Tree for distribution just before Christmas. This is Casa del Valle’s second year of providing Christmas gifts to those in need through the Giving Tree. Last year, the gifts were provided for 34 children and widows from a local Hispanic church, Iglesia Gethsemani. Interest in participating was greater than the number of tags last year, so this year, children at the women’s shelter, Mujeres Unidas, were added as well as several residents without families at the local nursing home, The Heights of Alamo. Casa del Valle will be sharing the Christmas spirit with a total of 54 gifts that will be distributed to these three locations just in time for Christmas. Casa Del Valle celebrates the gift of giving Residents enjoyed Christmas Caroling at Victoria Palms RV and Mobile Home Park recently. The musicians had a decked out extended golf cart, while carolers rode on their bikes or golf carts around the park, stopping at residents’ home to bring them Christmas cheer through music. Many have special entertainment lined up with a dinner. So many of these parks sell out of tickets weeks before New Year’s Eve. So if you didn’t get a ticket in time and are still looking for things to do, there are a few cities having some celebrations you can join in on. As always, South Padre Island puts on good fireworks show. New Year’s Eve is just a little different, with a bigger show to celebrate the ringing of a new year. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. There are celebrations throughout the island at several locations too. The City of Pharr will have an actual New Year’s ball drop. The city is inviting residents to ring in the new year with live music featuring the Spazmatics, a firework display, a vendor market, and more. The ball drop event will also feature a drone show. The free event begins at 8:30 p.m. in downtown Pharr. While not exactly New Year’s Eve related, many cities still have their Christmas lights out for visitors to enjoy. Holiday Village in Brownsville will still have their little cottages all up and decorated until January 1. Hours are Sunday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. You can visit their website at https://holidayvillagebrownsville.com/. Hidalgo Festival of Lights will also have their events through January 1. The hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday they are open until 11 p.m. Find out more information on their website at https://www.hidalgofestivaloflights.com/. The City of Edinburg has their lights out for you to enjoy as well. They can be seen at the City Hall Promenade and will be lit until January 2. You can see the lights by going to 201 W. McIntyre St. in Edinburg. Most of the Valley cities will still have their lights on in their main parks throughout Christmas and into January 1. I invite you to drive around and see the lights, not only in your neighborhood, but your city as well. Have a great and safe New Year!! New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Valley

Kick off your resolution to explore the outdoors in 2024 with a First Day Hike at a state park, which will host ranger-guided and self-guided walks, bike rides, paddling trips and polar plunges in honor of the national initiative aimed at getting people outdoors. Last year, nearly 8,000 participants shattered the previous attendance record New Year’s Day by ringing in Texas State Parks’ 100th birthday with a First Day Hike. Texans across the state traveled to one of the 83 participating parks and hiked, biked, and paddled a combined 17,190 miles. “Texas State Parks’ staff had so much fun celebrating the 100th birthday with the people of Texas this year,” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks. “Last year, Texas led the nation in First Day Hikes participation and miles Soar into 2024 with a First Day Hike walked. We invite everyone to come back and be part of the fun again this year as we usher in the next century of memories. Whether visiting for the first time, or returning to your favorite park for more fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.” Trails at Texas State Parks range in length and difficulty levels. Some short, easy trails are perfect for family-friendly scenic strolls, while more strenuous ones can challenge experienced hikers. Trail maps for all Texas State Parks can be found on TPWD’s website, the recently redesigned official Texas State Park app and individual park webpages. “I am thrilled to see the continued growth and success of the First Day Hikes program,” said Lewis Ledford, executive director of the National Association of State Park Directors. “This initiative has become a cherished tradition, providing individuals and families with the opportunity to embrace the outdoors, and kick off the year with a commitment to health and well-being.” TPWD strongly encourages anyone planning a trip to a Texas state park to reserve a day pass in advance since some parks are expected to reach their capacity limit. Reserve day passes online through the TPWD reservation website or by calling (512) 389-8900. Its Beginnings Organized after Thanksgiving three years ago, the party’s first timeline allowed the Elks and Winter Texans only a few weeks to buy gifts, plan a lunch, decide on activities, and invite children. “It did get done,” District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Milly Hernandez said. “I told Tripp it would.” She said that it wasn’t as grandiose as he had envisioned, but that it was a beginning. And she felt Tripp appreciated their efforts. Tripp didn’t survive to see the second party, but in his memory, Milly named the event: “Tripp’s Christmas Village.” Its Third Celebration This year was even better than last year, according to Milly, who promised Tripp this event would not only happen, but would continue to grow. “If you saw the laughter, the cheer, the chaos at this year’s party -- that’s what Tripp liked,” she said. “We felt he was with us. And we knew that he was so happy that we were all here [doing what he wanted us to do] …” Its Challenges Behind the scenes, there were rather large challenges. The Elks needed at least $5,000 to cover the party’s lunch, gift buying and planned activities. But quite a bit of the funding wasn’t there. The non-profit Elks Lodge had spent much of their funds preparing Thanksgiving dinner packages for disadvantaged families. That meant Milly and the Lodge’s Exalted Ruler [ER] Tino Ordaz had to become resourceful. To meet their unmet needs, they decided to reach out to Elks who had been members for decades. “They not only contributed, but they chose to be part of the party,” she said. After securing the funding, the organizers faced another daunting challenge -- to make this party bigger than ever. Tino said he was looking for a bounce house to add something very special to the event when an Elk member told him she found someone who had an impressive train. Once the train was secured for the event, Tino decided to order a machine to make artificial snow, which he felt would e n h a n c e the outdoor scene. Indoor Excitement As children arrived at the “Christmas Village” this year, they were escorted to see Santa and to have their photos taken with him. Meanwhile, several adult elves stayed busy delivering age-appropriate gift bags to Santa for each child. A total of 160 toy bags had been filled by more than a dozen Winter Texans a few nights before the Saturday party. Those large-sized, green bags imprinted with “Joy” were loaded with games, blankets, crayons and coloring books, pencils, socks, crocheted hats, scrunchies, candy, stuffed animals and p l u s h i e s , with each item appropriate for the child’s age and gender. Behind the Gift Buying In charge of securing most of the gift buying for the bags was Winter Texan Colleen Benoit. She said it took her two movies – “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “White Christmas” -- to order everything online between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. She said she got it

Offer expires March 31, 2024. done in her “two-movie” timeframe because she ordered at night while watching her Christmas favorites on her computer. Before purchasing anything, she chose her themes: board games and stuffed animals. “A lot of the board games stimulate their creativity, their minds,” she said. “You can always play a board game; you don’t need electricity or batteries. It’s hands-on. Plus, children are communicating with other kids when they play. It’s a win-win.” According to Colleen, she had no doubt the children would love the stuffed critters. “At the party, I saw a couple of girls who really liked the cat plushies,” she said. “They were hugging them! Even the boys seemed to like those. They laid their heads on them.” As one of the elves assigned to bring the age-appropriate gift bags to Santa, Tripp’s wife Maggie said, “I was amazed and pleased at how excited and appreciative the kids were.” She noted, too, that everyone there was in a good mood, even the adults. After Visiting Santa Children had much to do to keep them happy and busy. Organizers said rides on the train, which kept running throughout the event, and cookie decorating were two of the busiest activities that day. A third favorite was introduced by Winter Texan Peggy Fleming. She donated many colored and iridescent beads (some with letters on them) and special accessories, as well as clasps and plastic string so children could make colorful necklaces, hair clips, key chains, and friendship bracelets with the help of volunteers. Milly said that next year she plans to add a second large “beading” table because the children really loved creating their own jewelry. Many other choices were available for children to fill their time at the three-hour event. They could play a variety of games, create Christmas cards and tree ornaments, work on a variety of craft projects, and enjoy a hot dog lunch, complete with chips and juice or hot chocolate with their “creatively decorated” cookie for dessert. After the Party Volunteers said they have fond memories of the day. Many noted that the children’s smiles and excitement were reward enough for the hours they invested. Peggy said that she still giggles remembering the young boy who slid off Santa’s lap, after sharing what he wanted for Christmas. As the youngster began walking away, she said, he stopped. Turned. And then sprinted back to Santa, holding up one finger, saying excitedly, “Oh, Santa, one more thing!” “Then the boy went to play a game, but before long he headed back toward Santa,” she said. “Almost there, he was holding up his finger again, saying, ‘And one more thing!’ as he shared his final wish with the jolly old man.” The Tripp Effect When Maggie heard this story, she said it would have tickled Tripp. Some said they regret not getting to know Tripp. To them Milly said, “all they had to do was look around while at the party.” See TRIPP pg. 20 Taking a train ride was one of the special activities that Elk’s Exalted Ruler Tino Ordaz and Terry, an Elk member, arranged for children attending “Tripp’s Christmas Village.” Tino vowed that he would work to make next year’s event even more entertaining for children.

DECEMBER 27, 2023 www.wintertexantimes.com 14 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Just a few more days and this year will be behind us. ANewYear is just around the corner. I am sure all of us have a special plan, a dream that we want to make come true. What is your dream? Will it be a cruise? Travel to a distant country? Or just explore locally? Travel seems to be on a lot of people’s minds right now as we are receiving a great number of calls asking what we will offer in 2025. Organizing a tour does take some time, especially into a different country. Many hotels and attractions are hesitant to commit to a contracted rate. This has always been true but now there seems to be more reluctance as the value of the dollar, the value of the euro and of the peso is so volatile. Just look at gas prices, which have dropped noticeably in the last two weeks. But will they remain lower, or will they go back up again? Just as soon as I can get commitments from hotels and transportation, I will publish the tours we are planning. If you are wondering about itineraries, look at our website. If a tour in the past has been successful, we generally will repeat that same itinerary. The hotels may change, because sometimes a hotel is sold, a new management takes over, and the service and quality may remain the same or it may drop in quality. When this happens, we look for other hotels, but the itinerary may continue the same with only the hotels changing. Some of the more popular tours are the Big Bend – this one is already selling well and is about a third or more full. Don’t wait too long to sign up for this one. There will be a slight change in the itinerary, staying first in the Chisos Basin and then going to Fort Davis and the Observatory. The Monarch Butterfly is almost always in the first half of February when the butterflies are at their peak. San Miguel de Allende is another popular tour. Now that so many churches and schools have recognized the Day of the Dead celebration, perhaps it is time to offer that tour again. There will be many one days offered with the top seller being the popular King Ranch and the King Ranch Farm Tour that includes the farming operation and the feed lot visit. Some of my favorites are the Painted Churches, the Texan Hill Country as well as of course Texas’ most popular destination – San Antonio. I grew up on a farm and so at the top of my list is the Farm Tour. I just haven’t had the nerve to climb up and sit in the cockpit of the crop duster plane … but some women do just that! You probably have a favorite that you want to repeat, or maybe one that you have never been on but would like to experience. Let us hear from you. Give us a call. Go … With Jo also has a very experienced home-based travel agent who can arrange a cruise or any destination that you have been dreaming of. We look forward to hearing from you. Let us help you fulfill your dream. Where do you want to go? SHUFFLEBOARD From pg. 1 “It’s the shuffleboard resurgence,” said Henry Miller in that article. Brenda Noakes, president of the Texas Sate Shuffleboard Association, said numbers hit a low about six to seven years ago, but they were working hard and doing things differently now to attract more shufflers. Last year they had 80 new players in just a few months’ time. And just with other activities during the Winter Texan season, a surge of players is expected to increase after the holidays as the full entourage of Winter Texans make their way to south Texas. Last year, the Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association had great turnouts at their events, and they plan on having bigger crowds this year as travel has picked up this season. They have about 20 tournaments each season and use nearly 40 courts throughout southern Texas. Ric Cunningham, president of the Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association is excited to get this season’s tournaments started. There have already been a few, but it gets busier these next three months. To participate, you must be a member of the RGVSA. You can visit their website at https://rgvsa. weebly.com/ for more information and a full schedule of events. Their first tournament of the year starts on January 2, with entries closing on December 29. The tournament will start with the ladies, then men, then a finals game on January 4. The event will be held at Fun-n-Sun. Entry fee is $5. This tournament is for men’s and ladies’ singles 75+. The next tournament is doubles on January 9 and will be held at Pine to Palm. Tournaments are held nearly every Tuesday through Thursday from January 2 to March 7. Entry deadlines are usually the Friday before the event. Flyers with more information can be found on the website. To compete in the events, shufflers must be part of the Texas State Shuffleboard Association. There is a lifetime membership fee and an entry fee per event. For more information about the RGVSA visit their website or call or text (720) 254-5967. The association conducts Texas State Shuffleboard Association sanctioned tournaments. To learn more about the Texas Shuffleboard Association, visit https://txshuffle. weebly.com.
