All of our favorite events are approaching fast. And we are already halfway through our season. Thirteen issues have been published, including this one, eleven issues are left. We still have so much to do and cover for you. Again, we look forward to this time of year. It’s when we get busy attending events, going to dances and entertainment, and hanging out with you more. It doesn’t always feel like work when we are having fun enjoying time with you and seeing all the things that you do around the Valley. Speaking of things to do in the Valley, have you checked out our Visitors Guide? It’s amazing the multitude of things this beautiful Valley has to offer. There is everything from historic sites, museums, parks, nature centers, entertainment venues, golf courses, and so much more. While in Mission you can drive around The 44th Annual Golden Age Olympics is underway under the guidance of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department. The event started in 1983 with competition in three events and has grown to include over 30 events. Competition is limited to men and women over the age of 50. What emerged was a community event that did much more than add a brightly lit and festive holiday atmosphere meant to put smiles on children’s faces. Port Isabel has dolphins and South Padre Island has turtles and sandcastles. There’s never a dull moment with so many sites to see and things to do. When the weather is good, which we have more good than bad in the Valley, take a walk at one of the nine birding centers spread out in the Valley – From Roma to South Padre Island. You also have a couple of state parks, a butterfly center, a salt lake, a turtle rescue center, and an alligator sanctuary. There’s something for everyone. If you find something we don’t have on our list, let us know so we can follow up and see if it will be of interest and maybe you’ll see it in the publication next year. Kansas Day coming up soon Leslie Blasing, a Valley favorite, will be performing at a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser in Alice on Monday, January 13. The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. with Leslie performing at 7 p.m. Leslie Blasing’s songs span seven decades of country, classic rock, 50’s and 60’s. South Padre Island has been her home for over 25 years where she has won multiple awards throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Join Leslie and Habitat for Humanity for a night of fun, raffles, entertainment, a silent auction, dancing, and community service. The event will feature BYOB and snacks, set ups available, plus Dale Wilson’s “World Famous” brisket sandwiches available to purchase beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10. 5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com JANUARY 10, 2024 Valley Star Awards 2023 Entertainer of the Year 2023 Individual or Small Band of the Year The Museum of South Texas History will host Aurelio Manuel Montemayor and Thomas Ray García during the Sunday Speaker Series presentation, “How a South Texas educator transformed the Chicano movement,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 14. Montemayor and García will present on their historical memoir, “El Curso de la Raza: The Education of Aurelio Manuel Montemayor.” The authors will share the historical context behind the South Texas Chicano Movement, including firsthand accounts from Montemayor. Key events include the founding of El Curso de la Raza, the founding and the fall of the Colegio Jacinto Treviño, and the role of the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA). The authors will also share insights into the writing process for the book and what they hope 21st century readers will take away from Montemayor’s story as an educator-turned-activist. Montemayor is an educator and educational trainer based in San Antonio, Texas. During the Chicano Movement, he co-founded the first accredited Chicano college, Colegio Jacinto Treviño. He also co-founded and co-facilitated the Curso de la Raza, a weekend retreat dedicated to cultivating leadership among men from the barrios. With a career in education spanning five decades, he is currently the developer of the Family Leadership in Education Model for the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA). García is a writer, educator, and entrepreneur from Pharr, Texas. He is the author of the award-winning short story collection “The River Runs: Stories,” which centers the Rio Grande as a site of transformation. He serves as the founder and executive director of the College Scholarship Leadership Access Program (CSLAP), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to increasing college enrollment rates in Hidalgo County. In 2022, he ran for the State Board of Education in the Democratic primary. Sunday Speaker Series is included in the fee for regular museum admission. Presented on Saturday, January 13 at 11 a.m., admission is free to the public. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. The presentation centers on how geology influenced the manufacturing of lithic tools in South Texas and Northern Mexico and how they are identified and used. Critical to this task will include archaeological methods employed in the collection and documentation of artifacts. Additional information will be presented regarding the Ancients that lived in this area. Morales is a resident geologist of South Texas and Northern Mexico specializing in mineralogy, local geology and lithic (stone) artifacts. As a collector of world-wide minerals and local ancient stone tools, he has undertaken research, along with faculty at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in the geology and archaeology of this region. A student of geology in the 70’s and participant as well as sponsor of the University Geology Club for over 40 years, his current research projects include identification of minerals from Mexico, lithic tools of the area, documenting, photographing, authoring, and co-authoring of articles on geology and lithic artifacts. Fees and registration must be received one week prior to each event unless otherwise noted. Each RV park will compete for this unique award. Points are awarded for playing in individual events. In team events, 75% of players must be from the same park to receive points. In addition to awards in individual events, points are awarded for participants finishing in first through third place. Overall Olympians are determined as the male and female participant with the most points. Participants finishing overall in first through third place will be awarded. Medals will be awarded at the end of each competition. Results for some events may require additional time. An awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, February 28 at Lark Community Center. Admission for that event is $3 per person and must be purchased in advance. In addition to the other awards, there will also be a Golden Age Olympics Hall of Fame award. This award honors and recognizes participants that promote the benefits of active, productive, and purposeful living. Up to one male and female is inducted each year. Nominees must be age 50 or older and a participant of the golden Age Olympics at least 10 years. Posthumous nominations are accepted. Nominations are available at the Parks and Recreations Administration Office. Deadline for nominations is Friday, February 14. Recognition will take place at the February 28 awards ceremony.
