Monday really hit hard this week, didn’t it? It might be a little cold, but at least we don’t have to shovel snow, and it doesn’t last very long. Unfortunately, it does mean that we usually stay inside when it’s like this. We don’t tend to venture out – at all. We had one of our writers trying to cover some Golden Age Olympics events. He showed up to a shuffleboard event on Monday morning, and no one showed up to play. Apparently, no one wanted to play out in the cold. I don’t blame them though. I would rather be at home, snuggled in a warm blanket watching a movie or something than outside in the cool air. This is when it’s a good time to have an extra puzzle or two on hand to work on. But…. We have warmer weather to look forward to in the near future. Projections are for another little cold spell on Friday and then getting back to some more normal temperatures so you can get back outside for your golf, shuffleboard, and RC racing. The 13th Annual Valley Star Awards will be held at Mission Bell Resort on Wednesday, February 21. The show will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. with an intermission. Mission Bell will have lunch available for attendees for a small price before the show at 12 p.m., or just get there early to save a seat up front. By Herb Moering Several thousand Winter Texans took advantage of nice weather to inspect the latest in RV fifth wheels, motor homes, boats and 4-wheelers on opening day, Jan. 11, of the 17th annual Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center Open House in Donna. Visitors were treated to free hotdogs and soft drinks along with chances to win door prizes and a grand prize in a drawing at the end of both afternoons of the open house. The grand prizewinners were Luis Lopez, who chose the four-wheeler; and Dan and Sherry Zirnhelt from Forman, North Dakota, who chose the enclosed utility trailer. Not only did the event continue to support the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association with donations and vendor entry fees, but they also granted a wish this year through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They were able to send a young girl and her family to Disney World. While some Winter Texans came to see the latest trailers, Sharon Eck, from Paradise South RV Park in Mercedes, said she and her husband, Dave, were looking to upgrade to a new fifth wheel. The couple was on their first visit to the Hoover center. This is the couple’s second season in the Valley, and they were loving it. The Ecks came in 2022 from Duluth, MN because of friends being here, “which is nice to have someone you know.” She’s found people to be open and easy to know. They enjoy the music opportunities with happy hours and concerts. They bike, but haven’t done much, except for a ride on South Padre Island. Sharon said she did the “polar plunge” at the Island, but only up to her ankles. This is the first season of venturing out more than just their park activities. Steve Sellnow and wife, Connie Henry, were also first-time visitors to the open house. The couple staying at Paradise Park Inc. in McAllen came from St. Cloud, MN in 2019. Steve said he enjoyed winter activities up north like snowmobiling and ice fishing. He said they played pickleball in Minnesota and they are trying it out here. Connie said she enjoys the social activities. Steve said there is a lot of fellowship to be enjoyed along with card playing and Bible studies. Dean and Kathy Mennen, from Medford, MN, and Dave and Pat Snyder, from Kearney, NEB, were neighbors at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo, which led to their friendship. This was the second year for the Mennens to come to the open house. They first came south in 2018, visiting some cousins in the Valley for a week and then two months the next year. They found the people friendly, Kathy said, and welcoming. They pretty much like everything, including the Santa Anna Wildlife Refuge. The Snyders, who had been to the open house for the past three years, Ron Hoover Open House continues to be a success Some neighbors from Trophy Gardens RV Resort, (from left) Dave and Pat Snyder and Dean and Kathy Mennen, took time to check out some fifth wheel trailers at the open house on Thursday. An RGV tradition continues For 28 years Winter Texans have filled Our Savior Lutheran Church in McAllen to join them in worshipping the Lord by singing polka melodies of familiar hymns. Previous events have included “Beer Barrel Polka” played to the words of the hymn “Come Let Us Worship,” and “The Happy Wanderer” to the hymn “He Lives.” The annual polka service has always been scheduled for the fourth Sunday in January and relates to the church calendar’s epiphany date. Originally the popular service with the Winter Texans was held in the church gym with three services to accommodate as many as 1,400 members and visitors from other churches. The past few years, the event has been held in the sanctuary, as it will be held this year. The event is slated for Sunday, January 28, at 9:30 a.m. A free will offering will be collected. The church will also be having their annual rummage sale in their gym next month, on February 9 and 10, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The church is located at 1105 W. Fern Ave. Call (956) 631-6121 for more information. McAllen church holds annual polka worship SPI Market Days. Courtesy photo Polka Worship, 2022. Photo by Herb Moering

5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com JANUARY 17, 2024 Valley Star Awards 2023 Entertainer of the Year 2023 Individual or Small Band of the Year While the Lone Star Jubilee shows are certainly filled with inspiration, fun and laughter, they also perform for a purpose. They have a ministry to support that keeps them doing what they love – entertaining, inspiring, and giving. Sam Ray, who first started performing at Dallas Christian College with the Master’s Four in 1971 moved to Branson in 1983 and changed their name to the Texans. They are now a full-time trio comprised of Sam, wife Brenda, and son Curtis. They began their full-time traveling ministry in 1999, performing more than 300 concerts a year. They have shared their stage with speakers like TD Jakes, Charles Stanely, Jerry Falwell, Tim Lahaye, and many more. Today, they might have gone down to 200 or so concerts a year, but they serve the same purpose, to help missions at home and around the world. They do this by singing gospel and putting on comedy skits at their shows. It is sure to be an evening of soul-stirring music, great comedy, and hand-clapping enjoyment for all. The group has traveled over 39,000 miles in the US, helping with senior adult low-cost housing, summer camps for adults and children, and fundraising for mission projects around the world. They have helped out in other countries by providing churches, feeding centers, schools, clothes, and other necessities. The Texans will be returning later this month for six concerts in the Rio Grande Valley. Along with Sam Ray and the Texans, bass vocalist David Little and Duke Mason will also be performing in this year’s Lone Star Jubilee. Duke Mason is a special performer because of his unique height of only 46 inches. However, his talent and charismatic personality bring a respect and dignity to his singing that only a few are chosen to have. Mason sings, plays guitar, keyboard, bass, and drums. Oklahoma’s David Little is known for his deep voice. He formerly sang with the Schaefer Brothers quartet. The Texans have won several awards in Branson and have also won a Valley Star Award for Gospel Group of the Year. A freewill offering of $10 is suggested at the show. No one will be turned away if they cannot pay. For information call (903) 436-5410 or email samraythetexans@aol.com. He sings, strums, cracks jokes, and tell stories about his childhood. He entertains them all. He has fun with what he does, and it shows at all of his performances. Rick says he enjoys performing for Winter Texans because of their love of traditional music…. and that they love to dance. He likes seeing audience members enjoying his shows by dancing, clapping, smiling from their seats. He is most known for his Kenny Rogers music, even though he has been told he looks like an older Elvis. He doesn’t only perform Kenny Rogers songs though. You can find him singing some Waylon Jennings, George Jones, and even Loretta Lynn. He can add that twang in his voice when needed, or just sing out the good ole country ballad. He has been entertaining for 45 years. He has spent most of those years performing Branson music shows where he entertains people from California to London and from Northern Canada to Mexico. He currently performs his Gambler show in Branson during the summer months. His performing has earned him a Traditional Music Hall of Fame membership. Rick is the producer of the Branson Terry Awards. He has performed with Waylon Jennings, Glen Campbell, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Earl Scruggs, Jim Stafford, and Gene Watson. He shares stories of performing with other artists like the time he was the featured singer for Jim Statler or performed as the Country Ozark Boys. He has also opened for a lot of artists during his time. He also has three sons that he is very proud of. He says singing and performing has been the drive of his life. He sings every style – country, Rock N Roll, big songs and ballads, classic rock, bluegrass and rhythm and blues. He plans on singing as long as he can. At a recent performance he shared his love for Veterans and how he was recently honored to become an Honorary Wolfhound. When he can, he dedicates a lot of his time to doing shows for Veterans. He takes time to listen to their stories – the good and the not so good. He said he is continually honored and blessed to be able to honor those that have served. Be careful, he is known for asking for volunteers to perform duets with him as well, but it always makes for an exciting, fun show. At the show we went to he ended it with Kenny Rogers’ “You Can’t Make Old Friends.” Then he had to loosen everyone up by performing YMCA. If you like a lot of country, and a little bit of rock n roll, be sure to check Rick out at any of his upcoming shows. He also performs a few more times at Mustang Lounge. You can find his full schedule online at rickmcewen.com or on Facebook at Rick McEwen Entertainer. Betting on The Gambler is a guaranteed good time Rick McEwen. Photo by Carina Brunson
