The Harlingen Community Theatre, located at 1209 Fair Park Boulevard, presents the beloved Fiddler on the Roof, which opens Friday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m., running two weekends February 23 through 25 and March 1 through 3. The play is based off the book by Joseph Stein that is based on Sholom Aleichem’s stories. Music is by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It is set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in or around 1905. The story focuses on Tevye, a milkman in the village of Anatevka, who attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon his family’s lives. He must cope with the strongwilled actions of his three older daughters who wish to marry for love. Their choices of husbands are not palatable for Tevye. An edict of the tzar eventually evicts the Jews from their village.
