Edinburg Scenic Wetlands World Birding Center (EWBC) has plenty to do this month and ongoing weekly activities. Next week, the park is having three different craft days. Sessions are being held at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Tuesday, December 21, you can help your feathered friends by making a pinecone birdfeeder. The fee for the program is $2 per kit, plus admission. Registration and payment are required by December 19. Wednesday, December 22, the park will show you how to add some whimsy to your holiday decoration by building a winter fairy or gnome home. The fee for this program is $5 per kit plus admission. Registration and payment are required by December 20. Make some music by crafting a nature wind chime on Thursday, December 23. The fee for this program is $4 per kit plus admission. Registration and payment are required by December 21. Weekly activities include the Tuesday Bird Walk. Join others for a walk around the grounds as a guide introduces you to the abundant and varied birds that make the gardens and wetlands home. These two-hour bird walks start every Tuesday, through May 10. Birders of all levels are welcome. This in-person program is dedicated to adults only. Please register a day prior to the tour date. All walks are free with paid admission or membership. On December 18, 10 a.m., visit the park and participate in a tour of the parks wetland birds. Ducks, grebes, pelicans, wading birds, and shorebirds all enjoy the large ponds at EWBC. Visit and explore the many wetlands birds and their unique features that allow them to survive in their environment. Participation is free with regular admission and membership. Space is limited, so register early. The park also offers guided tours for programs and groups. If you would like to have a special guided tour, give them a call or find their request form online. Looking for an opportunity to develop your skills, give back to your community, or protect the environment? ESWBC has numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Volunteer opportunities coming up are garden and nursery volunteer days on December 16, 18, 23, and 30, 8 to 11:30 a.m. They want all volunteers with a green thumb. On Sunday, December 19, an open volunteer day will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Call ahead of time. Sundays are a great opportunity for volunteers to help the park with a variety of needs, ranging from craft programs to maintaining the Edinburg Community Garden. The park’s winter hours, through January 2, are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Christmas holiday closures are December 24 though 27, and New Year’s December 31 through January 1.
