The Whole World is a Garden by Mónica Chang explores a simplistic idea easily overlooked in countless occasions: becoming one with nature and all the surrounding environment is essential in order to enjoy life at its fullest. She takes inspiration from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an Indian humanitarian and spiritual leader frequently referred to as “Sri Sri” (sh-ree sh-ree) who founded the Art of Living Foundation in 1981, a volunteer-based NGO (non-governmental organization) providing social support to the people. It is an understated yet well-recognized fact that happiness cannot be achieved by fulfilling it with materialistic things but by surrounding oneself with nature and people. She quotes Sri Sri by commenting “The day you realize that the whole world is your house –the sky your roof, the earth your floor, and that each tree is part of your garden— then, you will truly be at home.” Such words were the foundation for The Whole World is a Garden. This exhibition is prepared to awaken or make a significant connection with its viewers in their raw experience, denoting peace, and liveliness as Chang’s soft but colorful strokes depict sceneries along with a wide range of flowers and other elements of nature, like strong colorful sunny or night skies, ponds, hummi ngb i r d s , and butterflies. The paintings come together to make her memories, feelings, and dreams become history through art. The integrated feminine figures in floral mosaics along with gold and glimmer touches can give the viewers a little feeling of Klimt’s work during his golden age. The pieces also pose free spirited will, reminiscent of Henri Rousseau’s work (French post-impressionist painter.) This is translated in compositions that defy traditional scales, and in a chromatic exuberance, that also attempt exceeding the margins of the cloth. The museum is located at the intersection of Bicentennial Way and Nolana Avenue at 1900 W. Nolana in McAllen. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Regular admission is $5 with discounted $3 for children ages 4-12, students with an ID and senior citizens 65+. Teams Play for Fun You could see the joy on their faces. These teams play for fun, encouraging and abusing each other is part of the game. Then there was the weekly BYOB street party celebrating the end of every game - “The 10th innings.” Before the party starts, an organizational priority must be resolved, who will host next week’s 10th innings, then It’s Party Time. Over 100,000 people return to the RGV every winter. The locals call us Winter Texans, and it’s the group activities such as seniors’ baseball that help bring them back.
