Door prizes will be given every 30 minutes with three large door prizes given at the end of the show. Hundreds of exhibits in 27 categories of carving will be available for viewing after judging is completed. Categories of carvings include animals, birds, flowers, mythical creatures, jewelry, carousel animals, knife carvings, wooden toys, spoons, gourds, bowls, and wood burning. Some categories also include subcategories like types of birds. Both members and non-members may enter the competition. Ribbons will be awarded according to points received. Rally on the Rio The 24th Annual Rally on the Rio Woodcarving Seminars will be held Monday, January 23 through Saturday, January 28, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is six days of carving classes with nationally known instructors. The event will be held at the Nomad Shrine Club. The rally is an opportunity for woodcarvers of all skill levels, and those wanting to learn, to participate in carving, pyrography and painting classes. Classes vary in length from one to six days, according to the complexity of the project. Classes begin at 8 a.m. and end for the day at 4:30 p.m. You can register online at https:// www.rgvwoodcarvers.org/the-rallyon-the-rio/. Click on ‘Carving Class Schedule’ to see the full list of instructors, classes, and times classes are being held. Registration fee is $25 for one person or $30 with spouse or significant other. Instructors include Dennis Horstman withWillowCanes andWalking Sticks; Chip Carving by Jan Jenson; Ken Ramler teaching habitat scenes and many more. Other instructors include Gen Kreyling with pyrography, Brenda Lodermeier with pyrography, Jim Long, Lance Rath, Adair Rucker with Carving Santa, Patty Rucker, Fred and Elaine Stenman, George Vaughn, Jim Thalacker, and Rich Wetherbee. The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers was founded in 1983. The Carvers meet weekly on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. through March. Everyone is welcome to come and visit and join the club. Visitors are always welcome to look over a shoulder and ask questions. After a third visit, you will be asked to become a member with annual dues.
