I usually talk about the weather, an event that we attended, or things happening in the area. This week is a little unusual for me. I am just not sure what to ramble about, so I am going to reflect on what this season has been so far, and what is yet to come. This season has seen a huge growth in activities, celebrations and more. We have seen activities, dances, concerts and other events pick up throughout the Valley. It’s been a nice welcoming pace to have again. We have missed the activity. We had also missed our Wintertainers™ and the Canadian Winter Texans and have been thrilled to see them return this year. It has been a delight to be able to get out there with our readers, with the parks, and with the Wintertainers™ this year. It has been so much more fun this year. We are looking forward to the remainder of the seaThousands of Winter Texans look forward to the great entertainment that performs at the annual Mission Winter Texan Fiesta each year. The event is held by the Mission Chamber to say “Thank You” to the Winter Texans that make the Valley their home during the winter season. Flood Coverage Available Call or Come See Us 956-464-2886 Seven Oaks honors 50th anniversary couples This year, Seven Oaks Resort in Mission honored six couples who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary some time between April 1st of the previous year and the end of March this year. They hold this event annually for their residents. The program opened with an introduction by the chairperson of the event, Carlene Hemminger, followed by the welcoming of each couple as they walked to the head table. Music was provided by Tommy and Sara Bouland with an opening song of “My Best Friend.” Then the love story of each couple was read by either Hemminger or Charon Blenkin. The information for the love stories was obtained by asking each member of the couples separately several questions – When and how did you meet? What were your first impressions? What are your memories of the marriage, proposal, honeymoon, etc.? Since they were answering separately, the stories are often hilarious. Of course, there were the usual questions too, like how many children, grand and great; significant milestones, trips, bucket list accomplishments, and finally their advice on having successfully accomplished 50 years of marriage. After each love story was presented, each couple cut their own personal cake and shared it with one another. The individual cakes were beautiful decorated by Melissa Hevel. At the conclusion of the love stories, and the cake cuttings, Tommy and Sara sang “Remember When.” All attendees were able to enjoy cake and punch to celebrate their marriage. Couples honored were Allen and Faye Shannon, Jim and Laurel Gray, Mike and Elvia Kalman, Tom and Carol King, and Wayne and Cindy McGinnis. While they honored six couples, only five couples were able to attend the Golden Anniversary event. The husband of one couple was unfortunately recovering from a health issue and could not be in attendance.

The Randy Rogers Band to perform in Edinburg The City of Edinburg and Edinburg Chamber of Commerce recently announced that the Randy Rogers Band and Los Tigres del Norte will be performing at the city’s 54th Annual Fiesta Edinburg. The festival will run from March 2 through March 5 at the Bert Ogden Arena, and is expected to draw thousands of spectators. Set to perform on Friday, March 3rd, is Grammy Award winner, Los Tigres del Norte. This will be the return of the group since their last show in 2018. Texas Country favorite, the Randy Rogers Band will be headlining on Saturday, March 4. Tickets for each concert can be purchased at www.bertogdenarena.com. Attendees can also expect attractions such as the Heart of America Carnival, America’s Got Talent Fearless Flores Family, and Contacto animal and dinosaur exhibits. Additionally, the event will feature the return of the Fiesta Edinburg Parade. The parade will take place on Saturday, March 4th at 10 a.m. on Closner Blvd. The chamber asks participants to show their excitement for the festivities with a Fiesta-themed float. Participants are encouraged to read the first book selection titled “House Built on Ashes” by José Antonio Rodriguez. During the evening, museum staff and participants will engage in a book discussion and brainstorm about the book club followed by an after-hours tour of the museum. For Valentine’s Day we played a special game of Mixed Scramble— Best Ball. With such strong winds, the ball either flies over the green or stops short, depending on the direction of the wind and the hole you are on. No Hole-In-One today but we got a few birdies. It was donuts and golf on Valentine’s Day, and lots of RED on the golf course. The golf scramble was won by Don Tufnell and Marilyn Walters. Food Bank RGV unveils new Mission Resource Center The Food Bank RGV is proud to announce the opening of its new Mission Resource Center, a partnership with the City of Mission, which will serve as a comprehensive hub for social services, nutrition education, and food assistance for the community. The Center is located at the former Mission Food Pantry and will be open to the public for the first time on Thursday, March 2. The Mission Resource Center is part of the Food Bank RGV’s ongoing efforts to address food insecurity and related issues in the Rio Grande Valley. The Center will provide a variety of services and resources to those in need, including access to an emergency food pantry, nutrition education classes, social services, and a hub for those seeking volunteer opportunities. “We are thrilled to open our new Mission Resource Center, which will provide a range of essential services to those in need, including an emergency food pantry, nutrition education classes, and access to social services team. The Center will also serve as a hub for those looking to volunteer and make a positive impact in our community,” said Libby A. Saenz, CEO of the Food Bank RGV. The ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 2, at the Mission Resource Center. The Night Howlers, a recent nominee for best Rock n Roll Band of the Year in the Valley Star Awards, perform lots of rock music from the different eras of 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s; blues; classic country and rock; and even more variety. They perform throughout the Valley parks for dances and entertainment. The band consists of Rene DeAnda as the lead singer and drummer, bassist David Trevino, and guitar player Arturo De Leon. Rick McEwen, a favorite of Winter Texans, and also a Valley Star Awards nominee, has been performing in the Valley for several years. He has created a following in the RGV and in Branson. This year he has been presenting his “The Gambler” show at the parks along with other music. He does a lot of classic country music, partly because he just fits the part. He also does some classic rock, soul, and blues. If you haven’t had the chance to see him yet, her ’s a chan to see him for free. Bruce Boudreau is fairly new to the entertainment scene in the Valley and has been able to join other Valley performers like Curt James at performances. Hailing from Canada, he is a singer/songwriter and performs at happy hours, dances, and shows throughout Valley RV Parks. He performs 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, classic country, classic rock, and rock and roll. Denim and Lace are a unique duo group consisting of two ladies – Deb Nelson on drums and Lu Wieland as vocalist. They perform a variety of musical genres, from country, to rock, to pop. They also focus on providing a variety of waltz, line, and rock and roll dances. They perform regularly at Tipsy Monkey in Weslaco. While there is seating available in the amphitheater park, you are recommended to bring your own lawn chair for comfortable seating. For the next three weeks we will feature a different part of the Valley. This week we will feature the Mid Valley golf courses. Tony Butler Tony Butler’s impact on golf in the Rio Grande Valley may be greater than any other golfer in terms of local influence. The Harlingen public golf course bears the name of the man, Tony Butler, who helped bring some of the sport’s greatest athletes to the Rio Grande Valley for professional tournaments during the Great Depression. Butler was born April 18, 1908 and died Dec. 9, 1979 after 49 years of golf. He was known to play entire rounds of golf with just a 4-wood, taking on challengers of all skill levels. He was the city champion in Austin, captain of the Austin High School team and the first golf coach at UT. The public Tony Butler golf course is much like the man, requiring a sharp strategic mind and the ability to play consistent golf. The course’s website says, “His style of play, a consistent short game and accurate putts, came to reflect the character of skills required for success to those pursuing challenges on the Tony Butler Municipal Golf Course.” Butler’s biggest claim to fame came in 1933 when he defeated future hall of famer and National Open champion Gene Sarazen during an exhibition match. After that match he was hired as the Harlingen Country Club pro where he remained until 1937 – but his impact lasted for so much longer. On June 20, 1973 Harlingen municipal course was renamed in his honor. He retired to become a professional emeritus in 1975. He was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Tony Butler Golf Course is located at 2640 South “M” Street in Harlingen. It is a 27-hole course that meanders through the natural South GOLF From pg. 1 Texas terrain and is extremely easy to walk if you so choose. The 18hole course is a championship layout measuring 6,400 yards (par 71). Cottonwood Creek Located at 1001 South Ed Carey in Harlingen, Cottonwood Creek was developed in 1984 and, according to the pro shop, “the course is the same. It hasn’t changed.” A “very nice senior course,” Cottonwood Creek is open to the public. It’s a nine-hole par-3 course and that means golfers can fit it into their busy – or not-so-busy – schedule. The pro shop is open in the mornings and the signature hole is No. 5. It’s 175 yards across water. Make sure you hit enough club because “there are a lot of balls in there.” To walk nine holes is just $13 and to do 18 is just $18 – one of the few joys in life that are still $1 per… even the cheapest of coffees are $1 at best (before taxes). So, enjoy the serenity of this nearly 40-year-old course. Harlingen Country Club Harlingen Country Club first opened its doors in 1949 and its member-owned hacienda style clubhouse and course, which was designed in 1965 by Dave Bennett and Leon Howard, just fits like a glove. It is the epitome of country club living and the course has a personality that is eloquently South Texas. The course has faced major blows, moving to its current location in 1970 on property that previously was Harlingen Airport. Hurricane Dolly then delivered a “crushing blow” to the clubhouse but the membership used it as an opportunity to create more and better, opening their new clubhouse in October 2010. There’s comfort and peace on, off and in the facilities, which include the 18hole course, driving range, putting and chipping greens. The large, majestic trees and layout have class and history written into them. The annual and longstanding Life Begins at 40 match play tournament draws the top golfers and possibly the largest golf gallery of any Valley tournament. The course ranges from 6,541 yards from the black tips to 5,035 from the ladies. The white markers snug in between at 5,625 yards. The course is located at 5500 El Camino Real. Llano Grande Resort and Country Club Located in the historical Delta Area, which includes the small communities of Edcouch, Mercedes, Elsa, La Villa, and Monte Alto – Llano Grande became a busy agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley during the 1920s when the Southern Pacific Railroad laid train tracks through here. The area was coined the “Magic Valley” in an attempt to draw people to the area, and Northeasterners heeded the call and came to develop the land. The entire part was named the best large park in Texas in 2015 and 2016 by the Texas RV Association and one publication described it as a small town, but its history looms large in the development of the Rio Grande Valley. Nestled quietly in the midst of all this is Llano Grande Golf Course, recently ranked No. 20 on Golf Advisor’s top 25 most improved courses. Reviewers confirm that this course is noticeably getting in better shape on a regular basis. It plays from 6,781 yards from the tips to a comfortable 5,792 and 4,964 from the whites and reds, respectively. It has various levels, something not especially known for in the flat plains-like Valley. Of course, it has Tierra Santa Golf Course
