It’s been just right for the most part. And with all this great weather, more people are out and about, enjoying the golf courses and the many nature parks we have in the Valley. We continue to say that there is so many things to do in the Valley. Our events calendar and Parks calendar are proof of that. But it isn’t just the parks and entertainment events that are happening. All of our nature parks have regular activities too. If you look at the World Birding Center parks, their calendars are quite full most of the year too. They have nature walks, guided tours, presentations, craft times, and more. You can look at those calendars on their website at www. theworldbirdingcenter.com. There you can find the links to all nine parks. Make it a goal to try to visit each one this year. Each one has something unique that isn’t like the other, so they are all worth visiting. The City of Mission is delighted to announce its extensive lineup of events in commemoration of Veterans Day, inviting the community to join in honoring the brave men and women who have served the nation selflessly. The R.E.D. Flag Ceremony is on Friday, November 10 at 9:30 a.m., at the Mission Police Department. Mission has proclaimed November 10th, and every subsequent Friday, as Remember Everyone Deployed (R.E.D) Day, reaffirming its support for the courageous individuals serving the country. Attendees are encouraged to wear red as a symbol of solidarity and appreciation. On that same day, November 10, all veterans are invited to attend the Veterans Appreciation BBQ at Mission Parks and Recreation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Whether dining in or opting for carry-out, veterans can enjoy a complimentary meal as a token of appreciation for their dedicated service. The highlight of the week is the annual Mission Veterans Parade, scheduled for November 11, starting at 12 p.m. The parade promises to be a vibrant display of patriotism, featuring over 60 entries of stunning floats, spirited school bands, horses, and much more. This year, the Parade Marshal is veteran L. David Flores Jr, Retired Sergeant Major, who currently serves as the Mission Assistant City Manager. The city encourages the community to come out in force to support our veterans and enjoy this extraordinary display. The parade starts at Conway Ave. and Business 83 and runs along E. Business 83. Following the parade, the celebration continues with a spectacular music festival with Christopher Marshall kicking it off at 12 p.m. at the 5x5 Brewing Co. located at 801 Bryan Rd. The Loud and Clear Veteran Music Festival will offer a lively and memorable experience featuring veteran artists across the Rio Grande Valley and Texas. There will be veteran vendors, veteran owned and ran food trucks, and veteran resources. The event will continue through the next day at 5x5 Brewing Co. featuring a chili cook-off from 12 to 5 p.m. and a Cadence Calling Fun Run with proceeds helping Sand Devils MC. For more info about the chili cook-off, call Gunner at (956) 566-3360. Mayor of Mission Norie Gonzalez Garza expressed her excitement for the upcoming events. “We are proud to honor our veterans and show them the immense gratitude they deserve. There is so much planned, so we hope the community unites for these festivities.” All events are open to the public and are free of charge. We saw pictures of someone dressed as a bowl of Fruit Loops, vampires, skeletons, superheroes, dragons, and so many more. Some that really caught our eyes were those at Victoria Palms that dressed as their favorite Wintertainers™ like Ron Moshier and Steven May. They do say imitation is the highest form of flattery. At Casa del Valle we found the Joker and Sally, and the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. There were others such as a referee and a mouseketeer. You can see more photos from both events online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Halloween fun was had all around Victoria Palms Halloween Costume Contest winner, Cutest category: Beekeeper and Bee - June and Ron Wimmer Tami Smith, Sally from Nightmare before Christmas was the female winner and Mark Smith, The Joker was the male winner. Both are full time residents at Siesta Village. Linda Hatcher as Ron Moshier, David Hatcher as Tim Mull, Roxanne Becker as Tracy May, and Gary Becker as Steven May

The event is dedicated to honoring veterans, current service members, and their families. This event will celebrate the brave men and women who have served the county and sacrificed so much for our freedom. The goal for the event is to provide support by having resources and health screenings LRGVDC invites Veterans to VetFest Courtesy Photo and an opportunity to learn about organizations and businesses the support the veteran community. Last year the event had over 200 attendees. They were able to provide heaters, blankets, food, and other resources to the attendees. In preparing for a larger turnout, the organization is also asking for donations of food, drinks, and entertainment for their veteran guests and their families. Your donation will not only help them put on a great event, but it will also make a meaningful impact on the lives of those veterans in attendance. The 30th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival begins Wednesday, November 8 at the Harlingen Convention Center. Nearly 500 participants will be met by 56 guides, 58 Vendors and 100 volunteers. Over 1,000 entries have already been judged in the RGVBF Art, Writing and Photography contests. This year’s festival numbers are much bigger than they were in 2021. This year’s festival includes a welcome reception, over 100 field trips, a silent auction, a trade show, a store, art, writing and photography displays, children’s activities, speakers, seminars and much more. The Birders Bazaar will be held from 12 to 6 p.m., November 9 and 10, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., November 11. The Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival is also hosting the inaugural Legends of Conservation Gala on Thursday, November 9. Now all I need to do is make time to go to one of their games. In fact, one way to keep up with all the happening in the Rio Grande Valley is to read the Winter Texan Times. And there is a lot going on. Just take your pick – there is something for everyone – music, art, dances, garages sales, cruises on the Rio Grande River or on the Laguna Madre for fishing. The Rio Grande Valley has just about all you could ever want. Sure, we are not really a Valley, and we don’t have any mountains. In fact, we are virtually at sea level. I live in Harlingen, where just a few miles up the road is a small town named Combes. Now old timers would call that town Combes Mountain. But why? When I look up the elevation of Harlingen, my computer tells me that the average elevation of Harlingen is 46 feet. The elevation of Combes is just 39 feet. Could it be because Combes is somewhat north of Harlingen, people identified north with going up? Now I am really beginning to wonder why or how we look at things. Residents of Harlingen have always said that downtown Harlingen is 33 feet. Since the Rio Grande River is actually higher than downtown Harlingen, it stands to reason that when the river floods, Harlingen, The water and rich soil of the Valley as well as most Rio Grande Valley cities, are going to be flooded. The natural flow of the flood waters will be from the river toward the Gulf of Mexico. Anyone living in the Rio Grande Valley in 1967 when we experienced Hurricane Beulah will remember how most of our Valley towns experienced major flooding. With excessive rain and slow drainage how can we not flood? But let’s look at the positive of flooding. The rich alluvial soil that we have in the Rio Grande Valley exists only because of the millions of years that the Rio Grande River has dumped the excess water on the land. Consequently, we have some of the richest soil in the United States. Right now, we could use a little excess water. Many of our farmers have already used their annual allotted water allowance – and it is time for fall and early winter planting. Over the last few years, our supply of water has dwindled so much that farmers are advised to try crops that use less water. Agriculture advisers are suggesting new crops for the Valley – crops that are more adapted to a dryer climate. One of those new crops is canola. A crop that I had never seen. Why not take a ride down Highway 281 just to see how many new crops you can identify? Or better yet join a Farm Tour and hear all about the evolution of farming in the Rio Grande Valley from the clearing of the land, to the irrigation system developed in 1905, and finally the necessity for crop dusting. It has been too cold the last week to even think about planting. But it won’t be long until we will have sunshine again. Thank goodness, our cold snaps are generally short lived. Hope you stayed warm. lingen, 901 N. Loop 499. For ticket information, visit the association’s website at www.HarlingenConcert. com or call (956) 392-9757. This new attraction will take guests up to 120 feet in the air . . . well above the treetops. After reaching the highest point, riders are treated to breathtaking views as far as the Rio Grande River and Mexico, then return to the starting point at speeds reaching an exhilarating 35 mph. This is the first of many projects detailed in Phase I of the Zoo’s new master plan, which was accepted by the Brownsville City Commission in late 2022. As one of the Rio Grande Valley’s top attractions, Zoo staff are hopeful that the zipline will attract a broader audience to Brownsville while making the overall visitor experience even more exciting for Zoo goers. Guests will be able to view the Zoo and surrounding areas from a whole new vantage point, gaining a greater appreciation for the beauty of the South Texas landscape. As always, the Gladys Porter Zoo is committed to the preservation of nature through conservation, education, research, and healthy outdoor recreation. For more information on the groundbreaking ceremony, please call (956) 546-7187. GPZ holds groundbreaking From the RGV Humane Society Earlier this week, we had an outpouring of support from the community about the brush fire that was dangerously close to our Mission shelter. Thanks to the City of Mission and the Mission Fire Department, our animals are safe from harm. You do not have to be a first responder to save a life today. Right now, every dog under our care in our Mission shelter remains at risk once again. The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society (RGVHS) dog kennels are over capacity at the Mission location. Dogs will be at risk of euthanasia if we cannot make space through adoption or foster. All adoption fees for dogs are completely waived. All adopted pets will go home up to date on vaccinations, dewormer, on preventatives for fleas/ticks/heartworms, microchipped and either already spayed/ neutered, or with an appointment for spay/neuter at no cost to the adoptive family. Anybody interested in adopting a dog should head to the shelter as soon as possible. Fostering a pet is always free and incredibly rewarding. RGVHS will provide foster parents with everything they will need to care for the pet, including food, toys, and other care items. Foster families can customize the length of foster to meet their availability, with foster periods lasting a few hours to a few months. For over three years, The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society has kept the flame of the no-kill movement alive throughout the RGV. With your help we can preserve that flame of hope. It is absolutely free to adopt and foster. RGVHS is open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. Your help will have an immediate lifesaving impact for the animals in our care. We have two locations: 227 Abelino Farias Street, in Mission; and 1106 Markowsky Avenue, in Harlingen. Adopting or fostering a pet from our shelter makes an immediate lifesaving impact, for the animal going home and for the incoming animals needing that open kennel. Please help us save lives today.
