There’s so much to do, even when the weather is not always great. The parks have so many activities to entertain you with indoors when you can’t get out there to play golf or go to the beach. But there are plenty of outdoor activities too if the weather is good enough for it, and most days have better weather – the bad days are few and far between. Many have options of shuffleboard, different remote-control vehicles, golf, swimming, and more. A reader reminded me last week about the sports we have in the area for enthusiasts to watch. With a university, colleges, and many schools throughout the Valley, there is a wide range of sports that Winter Texans can go and see – as well as entertainment at these colleges, schools, and university – of course we still love our entertainers that come to south Texas just to spend a few months with us too. The UTRGV Vaqueros baseball season starts next month. UTRGV Every year, theValley StarAwards offers a great lineup of entertainment – and we say it every year, this is going to be a great show. The lineup includes some of the best Wintertainers™ performing in the Winter Texan parks and resorts during the Winter months. We’ve got a little bit of comedy, some country, variety, and some rock n roll. This year’s lineup includes Leslie Blasing, Bruce Boudreau, Mark Merchant, Diego and Edith, Dale and Gayle and the Night Howlers. Leslie Blasing is probably a very familiar name to Winter Texans See VSA pg. 20 Valley Star Awards offers great lineup of entertainment Leslie Blasing. Winter Volunteers at Rio Grande Bible Ministries (RGBM) will hold a Craft/ Quilt/Bake Sale on Saturday, January 27, 8 to 11 a.m. to benefit students of both the seminary and the Intercultural Studies Program. It will be held in the multi-purpose room of the campus in Edinburg, 4300 S. Highway 281, (Closner Blvd.). Parking is available at the Closner entrance. The quilt auction will begin at 10 a.m. Free coffee will be provided all morning and cookies and baked goods will be available for purchase. A variety of gifts, goods, and quilts will be for sale, all made by volunteers. These make perfect gifts for family and friends and include wood items, cutting boards, rope baskets, embroidered towels, baby clothes and items, cell phone purses, American Doll clothes, and coin banks made from the old campus mailboxes. There are also wood items made from trees which used to be growing on the property. Quilts of all sizes will be for sale, and some will be auctioned at 10 a.m. Volunteers, male and female, work on these quilts throughout the season to have as many as they can available for the annual sale. The Winter Volunteers hold this event each year to benefit the Bible Seminary and Intercultural Studies student scholarships. RGBM exists to develop Christ-centered leaders with a Biblical worldview for the global church. Students come from all over the world to study at RGBM and most only speak Spanish when they arrive on campus. Seminary classes are predominantly taught in Spanish although as students work hard to master their course content, and they desire to improve their English skills to broaden their impact in the global church. The majority of students earning either associates, bachelors, or Master of Arts degrees in Biblical Studies return to their home countries to pastor churches, plant churches, become missionaries to other countries, or work in ministry service. RGBM also offers Intercultural Studies which consists of two semesters of intense Spanish language study and cross-cultural training for missionaries preparing to go into Spanish speaking cultures. Winter Volunteers come to the RGBM campus in Edinburg from across the US and Canada and their goal is to support the students, staff, and ministry by contributing financial support, building and maintaining campus structures and furniture, landscaping the grounds, library cataloging, childcare, and office support along with mentoring students in language and spiritual growth. Most of the Winter Volunteers are retired couples who arrive in their RVs and stay on campus or at Bibleville which is part of RGBM and is a retirement park and conference center in Alamo. Many students and Winter Volunteers develop close relationships during their time on the RGBM campus with the Winter Volunteers being affectionately called “abuelitos” (the Grandparents). All monies raised during the Craft/Quilt/Bake Sale on January 27 will go directly to help defray students’ education and living expenses. That’s the role we try to play.” The organizers said they made a list of all the categories that Winter Texans could use. Then they chose their favorite for each one. Most of these invited businesses have been operating in the RGV for years. However, one of them is extremely new. On Saturday, Cindy Biggerstaff will introduce Bigg Stitch, her new longarm quilting and embroidery business. “I’m retiring from my corporate job to go to work for myself,” she said. “The Expo seems like a good place to launch my new venture, to begin the next chapter of my life doing something I really love.” She said it’s exciting for her and she’s ready. Her Bigg Stitch business cards, her shirt (complete with her new business logo), her flyers, along with drawing gifts for Expo attendees have all arrived. Plus, she has samples of her longarm and embroidery work set to display. “I think of Bigg Stitch as art… as artwork,” she said. “From stitching quilt layers together with different patterns, to embroidering logos or names on quilts, Christmas stockings, hats, or t-shirts… I can do all of that.” As a side note, Cindy is not a novice at quilting or embroidering. They’ve been long-time hobbies for her. According to Barb, Cindy was invited to the Expo because “her work is exquisite,” and because her longarm work has been recommended by top quilters at Alamo Palms. “Choosing people like Cindy to attend is rewarding,” the co-organizer said. “I love that our Alamo Palms’ Expo is an event organized See EXPO pg. 24 Alamo Palms hosts Business and Health Expo One of 50 businesspeople and health experts, RGVgeek’s owner (Art) will be ready to diagnose Winter Texans laptop problems for free at Alamo Palms RV Resort on Sat., Jan. 27 from 10-1. 5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com JANUARY 24, 2024 Valley Star Awards 2023 Entertainer of the Year 2023 Individual or Small Band of the Year Bob Courtney, AKA Pastor Pudge, will be hosting the Gospel Music Extravaganza next week where he and others will be performing great gospel music to lift our spirits. The event begins at 3 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, at Winter Ranch Resort, 600 State Hwy. 495, in Alamo. Others that will be performing are Redneck Revival, Alta Courtney, Mike Leichner, and Jamie Layton. Redneck Revival is the duo of Bob and Alta Courtney. Their show is much more than just gospel music. They have a mix of clean country music, gospel, and comedy and have been performing at Winter Texan parks now for four years. Bob, a retired rodeo clown, has performed comedy for years, and now brings that to the stage with music and doing skits and songs with his wife Alta. Alta has been performing gospel music for many years. They have combined their music and comedy talents into one great show. You can bet since Pastor Pudge will be there, that Sister Sludge will make an appearance as well. Jamie Layton has a distinctive low voice – you can’t miss it. His love for gospel music began in the 90’s and he has been singing ever since. He attended the Baxter School of Music, sang with the River City Quartet for a number of years, and he now sings by himself and with the Abundance Quartet. Mike Leichner’s ministry spans multiple areas over many years. It began with him traveling with and playing lead guitar and steel guitar for his family the Singing Ledbetters. After fulfilling a military commitment, he began traveling in Evanglistic ministry which included singing with his wife and brothers, The Leichner Brothers and Dee. He has done statewide camp meetings and revivals, music ministry with 12 recordings and many original songs, he is a published author, and most recently has had two country gospel recordings. His latest project is a patriot recording. He is also a founding pastor of the Ark Church and has ministered on several TV shows including the 700 Club, and radio broadcasts. He is a United States Marine with a love for his country and a heart for God. His mission is to promote Jesus and the Good News of the Gospel, and it is reflected in his music. The event is free, but they will be passing around a donation bucket. A portion of the donations will be donated to the Christian School in Santa Rosa.
