Submitted by Larry Schmitt On January 24, 2024, one-hundred-forty (140) Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861, admission to the Union. What was super special is that twenty-two (22) Kansans joined the group for their first time. YAY!! This year’s event took place at Balli’s Social Event Center, the Krysta Room in Mission. The organizers much appreciated that all tables and chairs were set up by the host. The tables were decorated to the organizer’s choice. A great lunch was prepared and served by Ballis Catering of Mission. Entertainment was provided by Rusty Rierson, home grown entertainer from Augusta, KS and Jane Heinen, hometown is Meriden, KS. Jane is a great yodeler. We heard many positive comments about the fast delivery and taste of the food, and about the entertainers. Jan Bergman, chair of the event and Larry Schmitt, communications and reservations, facilitated the day’s events. The organizers also thank all the volunteers that facilitated registration, collecting monies, and distributing the prizes. Jan works hard throughout the year to accumulate door and raffle prizes. We are also thankful to some of the attendees’ bringing items for the raffle. Many attendees took great prizes home, including the writer of this message. Plans for the 2025 Celebration are in process. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The venue has not yet been determined. RSVP will be required. If Larry has your contact information, great. If not, please email your information to Larrys13@icloud.com. Kansas Day celebration was a grand event Grieving a loss? Valley natives, the group has been entertaining Valley residents for many years. Rene Deanda, drummer, and main vocalist has been performing since he was 15. The Night Howlers has been performing for Winter Texans now for seven years. The group loves to entertain. Rene says they live for entertaining the Winter Texan community of friends. And he refers to them as friends. You can certainly tell how much he enjoys this gig when you see his pictures on Facebook posing with fans and taking large group photos. Rene said he and the boys have a philosophy of being generous with their time and talent. They don’t ever take breaks. “Ever,” he said. He added, they might stop for a bit when the park wants to do their 50/50 or other door prizes and such, but they typically play right through their set, and sometimes longer. “We start early, no breaks, and we play late,” he said. Quite often, they have a three-song encore or finale after the designated stopping hour. The Night Howlers play a little bit of everything. They play classic rock, country, and oldies. So, you might hear them play Wipeout one moment, then to Elvira, and then Boot Scootin’ Boogie the next. You can be sure they will play something right up your alley. The Night Howlers to perform at Valley Star Awards The Night Howlers are typically a threepiece group, but also play as a duo from time to time. They play Happy Hours, shows, dances, and private events. Rene also hosts Radioactive Karaoke at places like the Icehouse in Mission and in Winter Texan parks. If you look at their Facebook, he’ll tell you where he, or the band, is going to be. What he wants everyone to know is that the Night Howlers love their Winter Texan Community. They go out to each performance ready to entertain and have fun. The ‘boys’ love the excitement and thrill of entertaining and bringing people happiness. You can see The Night Howlers perform during the Valley Star Awards show on February 21 at Mission Bell Resort in Mission. 7 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com FEBRUARY 7, 2024 Mark Merchant is a native of Atlanta Georgia and has been performing ventriloquism since he was born. When he was born, and the doctor slapped his bottom, cries were heard from a baby in the next ward. He has performed all over the civilized world, and parts of Florida. This is his first season in the RGV, and he is having a blast bringing laughter and love to so many wonderful communities. He has been performing since he was 10 years old. Comedy ventriloquism has taken him around the world, paid for his college education, and introduced him to the lovely lady to whom he is married. Just about to celebrate 35 years of happiness. “Wonderful marriage. What’s the secret? Let the dummy do the talking,” said Mark. His act has been featured on America’s Got Talent, the David Letterman show, and the NBC today show. The comedy material is as fresh as today’s headlines... It’s always clean, always current, and always funny. He does his research and knows his audience. Along with communities, casinos, luxury cruise lines, like SilverMark Merchant to take the stage at Valley Star Awards sea, and Crystal, Mark also is in demand at corporate events, bringing his humor to meetings. He loves traveling, and even driving from Harlingen to Mission on interstate two. “It’s a fact that stretch of highway started construction when there were covered wagons, and it will be completed when there are flying cars.” Most interesting and unique fact about Mark Merchant, is he and his wife Cindy were married in March 1988, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Mark was performing at a convention and invited Cindy on stage. The wedding was performed in six minutes and 12 seconds as part of his show. He had a real dummy as his best man, but he has a real doll as his wife! Look for Mark in your communities or you might just see him driving his SAAB sport Combi with the license plate WINGTIP. You can find out more about Mark Merchant on his website at www.markmerchant.com. You can also find his schedule and stay up to date on where he is at by following him on Facebook. Mark Merchant is entertaining at the Valley Star Awards show on February 21 at Mission Bell Resort in Mission.
