Time is flying by. Good thing is it keeps us busy here at the Winter Texan Times. Wintertainers™ are arriving and in full force. Now we get to have some fun and visit parks to enjoy them and spend time with y’all. This past week I was able to go out to Golf View Estates and listen to Leslie Blasing. There is no doubt why she has won Female Entertainer of the Year and a Heritage Award from the Valley Star Awards. She THC celebrates relighting of Port Isabel Lighthouse The Mission Chamber of Commerce is still making appointments for their upcoming Community Health and Wellness Fair taking place on December 8th and 9th, at the Mission Event Center, 200 N. Shary Rd. from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Appointments are for blood work only. A 12-hour fast is required by the date and time of your appointment. There are other tests Health Fair this weekend The Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) will feature the “Bishop Emeritus Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection,” a spotlight exhibit displaying 120 nativity scenes. Born in 1934 and ordained as a Catholic priest in 1957, Father Raymundo Peña was named Bishop in 1976. On his passing in September 2021, the Bishop willed his collection of nativity scenes to MOSTH and to the Historic Brownsville Museum. See NATIVITY pg. 20 Nativity scene collection on exhibit at MOSTH See HEALTH pg. 20 The Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site will commemorate the first official lighting of the historic lighthouse in 117 years at 6:30 p.m. on December 9. The THC funded and coordinated the reproduction of a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens to be fitted into the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse. This is something that has been constant among Winter Texan parks. As a line from a movie states, “You build it, they will come.” If you live in a Winter Texan Park, you are bound to see at least a handful of Wintertainers™ throughout the season. They are here to provide music and entertainment for dances, happy hours, special events, and entertainment nights at the parks. These Wintertainers™ come from a myriad of places, including many local, but a lot of them are well known entertainers in places like Branson and Silver Dollar City. Somehow along the way they found the Rio Grande Valley and you. A majority of them don’t get here until after the holidays, after their busy schedules at other concert halls, or stop by while traveling to other destinations through the U.S. They come here to do one thing – to entertain, and they do it well. Some popular Wintertainers™ from the past include Royce Deaver and The Drifters, Texas Pioneers, See LOOKING BACK pg. 24 the Frankie James Band, Terry Martin the Ozark Gambler, and Chet Short and his Texas Swing Band. Other names have been the Winter Texan Dance Band, Music Masters, the Country Notables, and the Leonard Reyman Band. The list goes on and on with names and faces we don’t see any more for one reason or another. More familiar names from the not so recent past are Redhead Express, Gordy and Debbie, Auntie Kreamsaugen, Vance Greek, Star Fire Family Show, John Rex Reeves, Bernie and Red, James Marvell, David Church, Cowboy Poet Richard Bellert, and Bill Brooks. Today’s list includes the talent of Jason Whorlow, Nu-Blu, Steven May, Carlos Canas, The Chamberlins and Southern Express, Dave and Daphne, Dale and Gayle, Rusty Rierson, Curt James, Rick McEwen, Bill Chrastil, Ralph Kuster, Leslie Blasing, Bottomline Band, Lindley Creek, Helen Russell and Co., Mountain Highway, and soooo many more. These and more can be found on our website under Wintertainers™. These entertainers are full of talent. They come to the Valley every year to entertain you and have a good time with you as well. We know this group of people has a blast while here. They enjoy the atmosphere at their events and getting to know their audience personally. This is one reason why we have the Valley Star Awards. RGVWoodcarvers The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun their seasonal meetings. The woodcarvers are meeting at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr. The Carvers meet weekly on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. through March. Everyone is welcome to come and visit and join the club. Get ready to build/carve for the Woodcarvers Show in January. Senior Ambassadors The Senior Ambassadors is looking for singers to join their chorus. Keep McAllen Beautiful to host Posada Keep McAllen Beautiful is hosting a Christmas Posada at Archer Park, located at 101 N. Main St. on Saturday, December 10, starting at 7 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will feature the traditional posada procession that reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging. The procession culminates at a nativity scene, with shepherds and the Three Wise Men. The posada will be accompanied by traditional singing during the procession and will conclude with Christmas songs performed by choirs from Our Lady of Sorrows Church and The Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints church and missionaries. “Come and experience the joy of Christmas with the story of the baby Jesus’ birth and by singing along to festive Christmas carols,” said Chris Lash, program manager for Keep McAllen Beautiful. “The event is free and open to everyone in the community.” Keep McAllen Beautiful is an educational, non-profit organization that develops and expands the awareness of McAllen’s citizens and visitors about littering and proper disposal of waste and promotes the preservation and enhancement of McAllen’s natural beauty and environment.

Entries will be accepted in three categories: Hand-quilted Bed Quilts, Machine-quilted Bed Quilts, and Wall Hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. Quilts will be exhibited in the Museum’s Post Office building. Quilts and wall hangings must be ready to hang, with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in/first accepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible presentation for all quilts. To allow for the broadest representation, participants may submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. The quilts will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second, and third places in each category. Best-of-show and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. Quilts may be entered by submitting an entry form, which is available at the Museum. Entry forms and quilts will be accepted at the Museum from Tuesday, December 6, through Thursday, January 5, 2023, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition to weekends, the Museum will be closed December 23, 26, and 30; and January 2. Quilts may be pre-registered, and the quilts themselves may be delivered on any date during this time, through the January 5 deadline. If you would like to enter your quilt, you are urged to register early, because space is limited. The exhibit opens on Saturday, January 14, 2023, and continues through Friday, February 17, 2023. The market features original art for sale, created by local artists offering a great variety of unique gifts for the holiday season. The Christmas theme will showcase paintings, sculptures, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry, Christmas ornaments and more. The Market had an opening reception on December 3 and will remain open until December 17. The Christmas Market will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. UVAL is a nonprofit organization of artist volunteers. The Mission venue provides studios where artists meet socially, sharing ideas, learning, and creating art, as well as a gallery where artists display and sell their artwork. SamHouston, in Pharr. The event features the sale of a variety of homestyle foods and beverages from many parts of the world, including Greece, Lebanon, Mexico, Russia, and Eastern Europe. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival, held on the second Saturday of December each year, is a much-anticipated event for the local community, families, and Winter Texans alike. The festival is a fun and educational event for all attendees. With free entry, parking, activities, and a wide variety of entertainment, there’s always something for everyone to see and do. The fundraising event features the sale of international foods, soups, and ethnic baked goods, including the church’s homemade baklava, baked goods, spanakopita, stuffed grape leaves, and much more. By the time I pulled up for lunch at Pirate’s Landing at the foot of the causeway, the sun had just burst free of the gray and dreary morning. A good omen of what was ahead? While it is still early in the season, I could pick out several tables with Winter Texans sitting down to their lunches in a very busy dining room – and it wasn’t quite noon yet. Even with the amount of traffic the staff was very attentive, and dishes were steadily streaming from the kitchen. I started my lunch off with fresh lemonade and Coctel de Camaron. This beautiful dish filled with plump firm shrimp in a well-balanced sauce with cilantro and tomato is served chilled with tortilla chips, and tastes as great as it looks. For lunch I ordered a garden salad and Red Fish Rockefeller with a side of vegetables consisting of tender steamed zucchini, broccoli, and carrots. The fish was served on a bed of fluffy and flavorful Rice Pilaf, which could easily have stood on its own merits, and served the ideal supporting role to the star of this dish. A generous fillet of delicately firm red fish, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection, eclipsed half the plate atop the bed of rice. All of this was topped with a rich Rockefeller sauce with parsley and parmesan that made the perfect complement to the mild red fish. If you haven’t been to Pirate’s Landing, or if it has been a while, we invite you to try them, or try them again. We have never been disappointed by the food or the service, and no matter where you are in the valley, this is always worth the drive. Pirate’s Landing is located at the foot of the Causeway in Port Isabel’s Lighthouse District at 110 N Garcia Street, and is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Returning this year is the popular “Posada Por Tiempo,” which takes guests through the museum’s Rio Grande Legacy exhibitions while telling the biblical story of María and José’s search for an inn. The “Posada Por Tiempo” performance is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Live musical performances start at 1:30 p.m. in the museum’s Courtyard Gallery. Kicking off the holiday spirit is a suite by Edinburg North High School’s orchestra directed by Moises Llanes. Barrientes Middle School Classical Guitar Ensemble, directed by Juan Amaro, will continue the performances at 2 p.m. followed by the Edinburg North High School Chamber Ensembles, directed by Chad Dempsey. Community-favorite Edinburg North High School Mariachi Oro, directed by Abel Acuña, will conclude the performances at 4 p.m. Families and visitors are invited to enjoy fun make-and-take holiday crafts, which are included with the regular museum admission fee. Families can play classic tabletop board games such as Tic Tac Toe, Jenga and Connect 4 in the Grand Lobby. Meet Cowboy Santa in the upstairs Reading Ranch for a family photograph on real horse saddles and, for $2, take home a Polaroid print ornament. Cowboy Santa and his ranch-hand will gift a book to each child during the event, a generous donation from Lisa Gorena. Spotlight exhibits will feature a display of vintage toys in the Grand Lobby, poinsettia trees in the Mezzanine and the “Bishop Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection” in the Store Arcade. Spotlight exhibits are included with the regular museum admission fee. Grind Coffee Company will sell hot and cold coffee beverages and Mexican pan dulce. The drink menu will include holiday drinks such as Mexican Mocha and Maple Lattes.
