Has it been busy! We have had an amazing week. We went to some entertainment, and we were at the Ron Hoover Open House last week. The Ron Hoover event was packed. We were overwhelmed and so blessed with all of the feedback and visitors to our table. With the amount of people that came through, we ran out of almost all of the handouts and freebies we had on hand. We loved being able to chat with our Winter Texans that came through. It was tons of fun! We even met someone that has been reading our paper since the very first issue. He remembered reading the first issue that was published in 1987. He said he had missed some here and there when he wasn’t able to travel but has enjoyed the paper since its beginning. We also gave out several sets of tickets to the Valley Star Awards coming up next month. The winners were Karol Jensen, Mario Lefebvre, Sharon Hansen, Roger Hoverson, and Pam Steffens. They usually find like-minded individuals, as we all do, and make a thing of it. According to a Winter Texan Times article in January 1988, back in the early 1940’s a small group of Winter Texans were instrumental in forming a tourist club in Edinburg. “They had such an enjoyable time during the winter in the warm Southland away from the ice and snow, and wrote such glowing letters home that more and more friends and family members flocked to the Valley, too,” says the article written by Elsie Fetters. This club was just a group getting together wherever possible to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or sing or eat together. Much later on, the club got organized and developed by laws and regular officers and designated volunteers. They started meeting at the Chamber of Commerce until they outgrew that and then had to find a school, church, the Echo Motel and eventually the Edinburg Boys Club Complex to hold their meetings. By 1969, the membership of this club was over 300. That is when the City of Edinburg decided to build the activity center. While this club may not be around anymore, plenty have taken their place. Today, there are clubs with main interests. There is the woodcarver’s group, the Red Hatters, rock clubs, bicycling groups, and more. There are groups within parks, and there are groups within cities. Many of these groups get together weekly, or at least monthly. You can read about some when you see the reunions and meetings in our paper. We often get submissions from these clubs after they have a meeting. These groups get together to have fun, to share hobbies, stories of their summer homes, to learn new skills, to polish old skills, and more. He became a full-time actor and performer after landing the lead Chester Gregory to perform in Harlingen Leslie Blasing is always a hit with Winter Texans By Kathy Olivarez “What Kind of music do you like?” asked Leslie Blasing as she started her show at Hidden Valley Ranch on Monday, January 23. “I sing all sort of music from 10 decades of songs in genres such as country, pop, swing, rock and roll, and patriotic. “But I don’t do rap!” she told her audience. “My favorite music is from the big swing band music in the World War II era.” She started her concert with two upbeat happy pop songs. “My Girl,” a song about sunshine on a cloudy day, was followed by, “My Guy,” a song that warned the audience they could say nothing to make the singer give up “her guy.” Leslie switched to country with a Conway Twitty, song, “It’s only Make Believe.” This was a followed by a 1950’s Elvis Presley song, “Blue Suede Shoes.” For the Canadians in the audience, she sang Anne Murray’s, “Snowbird.” Leslie said she had been traveling to Canada during the summers to sing at the request of Canadian Winter Texans. For the last two years she has done a two-day benefit in Manitoba to aid a Royal Legion group in danger of losing their building after covid. She plans to return this summer. The music is usually patriotic music. She then sang several patriotic songs beginning with the World War II era song, “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy in Company B,” and Duke Ellington’s, “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.” Moving to the Korean War, often referred to as “the forgotten war,” she sang Jo Stafford’s, “You Belong to Me,” a song about a young couple parting due to his upcoming military assignment. Paying tribute to several long-time music legends who died in 2022, Blasing called Loretta Lynn, “A feisty singer” who sang songs like “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man.” Lynn’s heart-felt, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” touched people’s hearts everywhere. Another music icon who died in 2022 was Olivia Newton John, who sang, “Let Me Be There.” Blasing paid tribute to male singers like Mickey Gilley, who sang many popular country songs such as “That’s All that Matters to Me.” Blasing clowned around on an imaginary piano as she mimicked Jerry Lee Lewis’s antics while Blasing started the second half with Broadway hit show themes such as the 1927 classic, “Ol’ Man River,” from Showboat. She also sang the themes from “Pretty Girl” and “Jersey Boys,” singing “Great Balls of Fire!” She added a humorous skit on “Seven Spanish Angels” sung by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. She had her hair in pig tails and had a bread clip on her nose to imitate Willie Nelson’s sound. She then switched to sunglasses and swayed at a pretend piano while doing Ray Charles’ voice. Other singers included in the show were Patty Loveless, Celine Dion, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Credence Clearwater Revival. Regan James (Swedeen) lives in Minnesota with his wife Char in the summer months and has made his home in the Valley since 2013 in the wintertime. James has previously been awarded the Best Country Band at the Valley Star Awards twice under Regan James and Hired Hand Band, and for Ohio’s David Church’s very popular Hank Williams show in the Valley. James has also appeared with David Church on RFD-TV’s Midwest Country Show, as well as Connie Lee and Friends radio and TV show at Tennessee Roadhouse, Alexandria, MN. Members of Country Doctors have been playing together for 16 years. During the winter months, Country Doctors bring in a sub bass player for Regan, but is welcomed back every summer after returning from the Valley. Regan James has performed in shows with such national stars as Ray Regan James performing at Valley Star Awards Armed with two guitars and an old suitcase drum, to say this Americana duo is greater than the sum of their parts would be a vast understatement. Winnie Brave has been hailed as one of Alberta’s best kept secrets. Known for their dynamic and energetic shows, Winnie Brave is a sonic force to be reckoned with. This husband and wife team, Brad and Amy, have carved out a family business from their shared love of the game. Drawing inspiration from their extensive travels throughout Canada and the USA, their songs reflect on small town life and the interesting folks who happen to cross their paths. Winnie Brave has been performing for 10 years. In 2012, the couple decided they wanted a new way of life. In 2013, they recorded their self-titled debut album. McAllen Carfest next week Hidalgo Watercolor Society’s annual watercolor exhibit “It’s a Colorful World in Watercolor,” opens with an artist’s reception on the evening of Saturday, February 4th, from 7 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to view the artwork of area artists as well as Winter Texan artists and meet the artists that evening. The Hidalgo Watercolor Society watercolor exhibit is hosted by the Upper Valley Art League (UVAL) gallery, located at 921 E. 12th St., in Mission. It is located right next to the Speer Memorial Library. This exhibit is free, open to the public and runs from February 4th through February 25th. Gallery hours for this exhibit will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Hidalgo Watercolor Society member artists meet on Fridays 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. January through March to paint at the Upper Valley Art League Annex. It is a welcoming group for watercolorists looking for a group to paint with as well as those interested in learning the watercolor medium. Hidalgo Watercolor Society offers a workshop to its members each January. UVAL offers other classes and workshops in other mediums throughout the year. A typical example was the many Winter Texans attending the twoday 16th annual open house at Ron Hoover’s RV & Marine Center in Donna, January 19 and 20. Of course, it’s nice too when Dustin Hoover emphasizes freebees like admission, parking, T-shirts, food, drinks and fun. A scavenger hunt was in the works as well, along with lots of other games and five tents filled with vendors, plus music by the Rustic Rose Band from Mercedes. Amajor enticement was the chance to win a main prize each day with choices between a cargo trailer, a four-wheeler or a zero turn mower. This year’s winners were Leticia Castillo fromWeslaco who chose the four wheeler and Esther Schwabe from Geneva, WI. The Schwabe’s chose the cargo trailer, saying they would use it to help their local church. Of course, the open house allowed visitors to take a look at the latest in RV trailers and boats. Sheldon and Jacqueline Crozier, from Nova Scotia, Canada, are spending their first winter in the valley, staying at Citrus Mobile & RV Park in Edinburg. They were considering upgrading to a bigger motor home from their 24-foot-long vehicle. They are staying in a park model now. Jacqueline, a retired teacher, said they had come to the RGV three years ago to stay a couple of weeks as her mother and two sisters had become Winter Texans. Sheldon, who is 34year air force veteran that included three tours of duty in Afghanistan and a few other places in the Middle East, said, “I’m lucky to be retired and can do this every year now.” Sheldon brought his Harley motorcycle and a couple of bicycles to help learn the area, Jacqueline added. She naturally mentioned the warm weather and also how friendly the people are in their park. Sheldon said “There’s lots to do, like going dancing.” It’s nice their kids don’t have to depend Ron Hoover open house has large showing on them with a son in the navy, another son is an electrician, and a daughter is a registered nurse. Terry and Carolyn Barbee, from Lazy Palms Ranch in Edinburg, also were looking at upgrading from the travel trailer that they have pulled to 32 states since they hit the road in 2016 after his retirement and her quitting a job. The couple, who live not far from the Mother Road, Route 66, near Litchfield, IL, headed south looking for a warmer climate. They stayed in seven different RV parks. “We worked our way down until we found a place that was warm,” Carolyn said. “We pick a direction for lunch and go until we find a place to eat,” Terry said. Carolyn likes to visit small towns and to look for historic buildings. But there is lots to do in their park also, like bingo, cards and Mexican train dominoes.
