The nippy, breezy weather didn’t deter spectators lining the route Saturday night for the City of Alamo’s lighted Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony.

While most of those watching the 43 entries pass by were bundled up in sweaters and coats, Del Engrisch skipped the extra coverings since she had arrived that day leaving behind 16 inches of snow and the accompanying cold in Minnesota. Her husband, Warren, missed the snowstorm because he had arrived three weeks ago at their place in La Hacienda Estates in Alamo.

The couple, who have been Winter Texans for the past five years, were joined by friends, Ernie and Marge Morris, from the same park. They have been Winter Texans for a dozen years. Both couples said they love parades and have been regularly to this parade in the past.DSC 0823 Alamo Parade web

The parade had a twist with the jolly old Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus leading it while seated on a trailer pulled by an Alamo Fire Department vehicle. After arriving at Central Park, Santa, in the person of Tripp Wright, who came from Alamo Rec/Veh RV Park and was doing this for the second year, went into a large lighted ornament where he met kids of all ages for picture taking time.

Alamo Mayor Diana Martinez chose to let PSJA Memorial Homecoming queen, Angela Ortiz have the honor of throwing the switch to light the huge Christmas tree following a countdown. The Miss Alamo court members gathered around the tree during the ceremony and were joined by members of the City Commission.

The mayor and commissioners greeted the crowd gathered at the park stage and thanked those who had participated in the parade and wished the audience a Merry Christmas. They were followed by groups of Guerra Elementary students entertaining with songs and dance on stage, much to the enjoyment of the paradegoers, especially parents of the kids.
