During the holidays, many organizations seek out the community’s help to fill extra needs that the community has during this time of year. Some organizations help with clothes, blankets, school supplies, food, and Christmas gifts during the fall months more than they do other times of the year.
The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley is one of those that provides Thanksgiving Day meals for many families in the Rio Grande Valley. It is through your help they can achieve this.
Last week, the Food Bank RGV distributed one turkey and all the trimming to 1,000 families. They are also assisting with a variety of other events with pantries and businesses across Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties.
They are, as always, accepting non-perishable items. Items can be delivered to their front office or receiving dock at 724 N. Cage Blvd. during normal business hours. They ask that there be no glass containers or prepared/hot meals.
The Food Bank is also constantly in need of volunteers and volunteer groups to help with sorting and bagging food. You can contact volunteer services at (956) 904-4509. Volunteers can find out more about upcoming opportunities at their website www.foodbankrgv.com.
Monetary donations are also welcome. These donations help the Food Bank remain responsive to community needs, especially in disaster response. Most non-perishable foods they need are canned proteins, soups, and easy open snacks (for the homeless population), and the donations help them fill in any gaps.
Omar Rodriguez, with Food Bank RGV, said that there are a handful of Winter Texan Parks that go above and beyond to raise funds and volunteer for the food bank.
“We cherish their generosity and experience and would be happy to work with more Winter Texan groups in the future.”
hey are already preparing for Christmas meals and making sure they have enough to give families that sign up for food items.
The Food Bank will be having a Posada event on December 8 at the Food Bank RGV.
