On the evening of December 13, parking lots were full, and crowds lined both sides of Texas Blvd. to attend the Weslaco Lighted Christmas Parade. There were those that opted for the reserved seating, and plenty more that found opportune spots to sit or stand with friends and family. With a seemingly endless line of festive floats and vehicles, Weslaco had an atmosphere of Christmas cheer.
Thankfully, the weather was nice, too. No rain and a gentle breeze made it easy to enjoy being outdoors for the entirety of the event. During the parade there were some vendors along the route offering food and beverages just in case you found yourself needing something tasty or refreshing.
At the corner of Texas Blvd. and Business 83 there were several performances by school bands, cheer groups, and even a taekwondo demonstration. Here, you would also see the emcees, Tom Castaneda with STHS and Sandra Rodriguez with Channel 5 News. The parade was streamed live in a couple different places online allowing those that couldn’t make it out to still join in on the festivities.
Some of the parade participants included STHS, Chick-Fil-A, STC, local businesses such as The Eatery and Mustang Lounge, and multiple schools from elementary to high school showcasing their bands, cheerleaders, athletics, and JROTC. Floats and vehicles ranged from western themes to snowy winter ones – all going along with the Country Christmas theme. There was even a group of Broncos covered in lights and other festive Christmas décor as well as some massive parade balloons, a popular one being a pig with a cowboy hat.
Besides the parade, there were other events happening the same day including the 5K Santa Dash, opportunities to greet and take pictures with Santa at various locations, and performances by local talent at local venues. So, you could’ve made it a whole day of fun in Weslaco.
If you missed the fun this year, there’s always next year. Information about local events, like this one, can be found in our Events Calendar both in print and online.
