McAllen Holiday Parade announces opening, debut highlights

Organizers for the McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B and powered by Bert Ogden Auto Group, announced two new elements debuting for the 11th annual presentation of the largest illuminated holiday and helium balloon parade when it steps off from McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, 2001 N. Bicentennial Blvd. on Saturday, December 7, at 6 p.m. Mateo Adalberto Lopez, will sing the National Anthem at the opening Holiday Musical Extravaganza that kicks off the parade festivities and the Hello Kitty helium balloon will appear as part of the line-up during the parade.

Harlingen Community Theatre is celebrating 50 years

Harlingen Community Theatre (HCT) is where Valley stars shine, and they are celebrating 50 years of highlighting that Valley talent. The theatre has a fantastic lineup that begins November 8 with Steel Magnolias.

Last year, my husband, son and I had the opportunity to see the last showing of Fiddler on the Roof. When I tell you it was a great show, it’s an understatement. These actors looked well-seasoned – and came to find out for some of them it was their first year participating. We had a great visit with the cast after the show as they lined the entry hall as guests were leaving, thanking everyone for coming to their show. We wished we had been able to catch more of their shows, because it was definitely worth seeing, and seeing more of, as often as you can. You can tell the cast really enjoys what they do when on, and off, stage and that they are dedicated to each production.

Valley Birding Festival starts next week

Get ready for the Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. The event is slated for November 6 through 10 at the Harlingen Convention Center, 701 Harlingen Heights Dr.
There will be over 100 fantastic field trip offerings to choose from including traditional tours through the parks the Valley is well known for as well as several new offerings such as private ranches for those seasoned returning festival birders. Special trips in the field with some of the featured speakers to further enhance their presentations are also always a great treat. In addition to field trips, they will also have keynote speakers, informative workshops, seminars, a giant tradeshow full of vendors, a silent auction, fun socials with local music and food, and of course all the birds.

Broadway in McAllen announces schedule, group sales available

McAllen Community Concert Association is featuring six concerts this season. The first concert is November 4 with Forever Simon and Garfunkel.

With soaring energy, wit, and laser-precise harmony, Sean Altman and Jack Skuller take audiences on a journey through the history of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, from their teenage roots to their global dominance as hit-makers. Performing iconic hits from one of the most popular duos in rock n’ roll history like “The Sound of Silence,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and more, Forever Simon and Garfunkel will entertain music lovers of all ages.

One-man, one-act play features at PCT

The Life and Times of Juanito Gonzalez is a one-man, one-act, family friendly, children’s play written and performed by Pedro Garcia. The fun and heartfelt show explores the importance of education, love and life and is set on Día de los Muertos.

Meet Juanito Gonzalez, who lived to be 100 years old, when he returns to his campo santo (cemetery) pulling an old sack of books. The magical sack contains all the books he read in his life. Today his relatives will re-live fond memories of him. Watch him jubilantly tell his story from childhood and all throughout his magnificent life.
