January 7-28 – Upper Valley Art League will have their all-member exhibit For the Love of Art on display through the month of January. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. UVAL is located at 921 East 12th St., in Mission.

January 13 – Join a park naturalist and observe the vast numbers of colorful butterflies that are attracted to the park’s gardens at Estero Llano Grande State Park at 1:30 p.m. Walk will be at a modest pace over flat terrain, pick the length you want to cover, one mile or two and half miles. Call for more information at (956) 565-3919. Walks happen every Friday. The park is located at 154A Lakeview Drive in Weslaco.

January 14-30 – IMAS will have the exhibition The Whole World is a Garden by Monica Chang. The exhibit features sceneries along with a wide range of flowers and other elements of nature. The museum is located at the intersection of Bicentennial Way and Nolana Ave., 1900 W. Nolana, in McAllen. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Call (956) 681-2800 for more information.

January 14 – Yoga for beginners will be held at the McAllen Public Library from 2 to 3 p.m. All you need to bring is your own mat or towel. The library is located at 4100 N. 23rd St. Call (956) 681-3000 to register or for any questions.

January 14 – Let a knowledgeable park naturalist guide you on a birding adventure at Estero Llano Grande State Park at 8:30 a.m. Learn to identify some of the 250 plus birds that have been sighted at the park. You’ll walk along the boardwalks and through the wetlands getting an up-close personal look at the shorebirds, herons, egrets, waterfowl, and woodland birds that reside at the park. Call for more information at (956) 565-3919. Walks happen every Saturday. The park is located at 154A Lakeview Drive in Weslaco.

January 14 – The Mission Historical Museum presents MHM Lecture Series with Tequila Sunset: Liquor Smuggling in Prohibition Era South Texas by George T. Diaz at 11 a.m. Admission is free and coffee and light refreshments will be served. The museum is located at 900 Doherty Ave. Call (956) 580-8646 for more information.

January 15 – Leslie Blasing will hold her Where the Hell is Alice Tour fundraiser in Alice. This is a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity that builds a house every year around the event time. January 15 – As part of its lecture series, IMAS will host a lecture by Dr. Jongsun Kim, from UT-RGV, from 3-4 p.m. The lecture is included in general admission. His talk will cover his recent findings on the consequences of diverse nitrogen input caused in coastal productivity and organic fluxes in the coastal Gulf of Mexico. He will share his on-going study of the nutrients in the Gulf of Mexico and its importance to the overall health of our oceans. January 17-18 – The Pharr Community Theater will have open auditions for their upcoming play, Patricio el Penitente. The cast consists of six roles ranging in ages 18-70. Auditions will be held between 7 and 9:30 p.m. on a first come first serve basis. No appointment needed. The theater is located at 213 W. January 20 – Frontera Audubon will host a raptor identification workshop. Learn the basics behind raptor identification. The course is open to all levels but is limited to 20 participants.
