Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host author and Texas historian W.F. Strong on Thursday, January 13th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a special discussion on birds of prey and reading/book signing of his most recent publication Stories from Texas, Some of Them are True, Vol. II on the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán. January 13 and 14

Ron Hoover will host their 15th Annual Open House next week, Thursday, January 13 and Friday, January 14. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The annual open house has become a popular event in the Rio Grande Valley, drawing in thousands of people each year. This year’s event is expected to be even bigger than previous years. All who register at the event will receive a free t-shirt, free food, free drinks, and free parking. Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center is located at 101 Expressway 83 in Donna (on the south side of the expressway). Parking will be available along North Ave. behind Ron Hoover. Golf cart shuttling will be provided both days.

January 14 and 15

RGV Woodcarvers Show will be held at the Nomad Shrine Club (1044 W. Nolana Blvd., Pharr). There will be carvings of just about every carving category on display. Many displayers will have carvings and supplies available for sale. Look at the full story in this issue

January 15

The City of Mercedes will host their Queen City Market Days located in historical downtown Mercedes from 4 to 9 p.m. The event will be held every third Saturday of the month from November through January.

Get the scoop on why soil is vital to life at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) January 15 and 16. The Soil Science Expo at IMAS is a weekend-long event celebrating the ground under our feet with virtual programs occurring Saturday, January 15, and a community day on-site Sunday, January 16 from 1-5 p.m. The event will feature hands-on art and science activities and opportunities for visitors to engage with civil engineers and soil scientists. Participating organizations include For the Love of Soil, McAllen Public Utility, Rodriguez Engineering Laboratories, LLC, Texas A&M University, and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Earth, Environment, and Marine Sciences.

The Museum of South Texas History kicks off the 2022 Sunday Speaker Series with a book presentation and signing featuring Robert Saldaña at 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 at MOSTH in Edinburg. Saldaña’s book titled, “Tejano Experience: The History and Genealogy of My Maternal Grandfather’s Garza & Olivares Families in South Texas” is a case study in Spanish and Mexican American genealogy which resulted from his efforts to learn more about himself, his family and fellow Tejanos. Guests can purchase a copy of the book, while supplies last, at the Museum Store that can be signed by the author. The presentation will be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at www.mosthistory.org/sunday-speaker-series-online.

January 17-22

Rally on the Rio by the RGV Woodcarvers will be held with 18 of the best instructors from all over the United States coming to share their knowledge and skills. Classes in all types of woodcarvings and pyrography will be available. The event will be held at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana, Pharr. Workshop Wednesdays kicks off at IMAS at 4 p.m. live on Facebook with Surrealist Collage inspired by “Imagined Worlds: Exploring the Carlos Melguizo Collection.” This program is free for all registrants. A limited number of supply kits are available for registration each month and are to be picked up the weekend prior to the live workshop. IMAS publishes supply lists ahead of the workshop. The museum is located at the intersection of Bicentennial Way and Nolana Avenue at 1900 W. Nolana in McAllen, Texas. Alfresco Weslaco will be held 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in historic downtown Weslaco. Free admission. The heart and soul of the community is in Downtown and Weslaco wants to share it with you by providing music and art. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes. SPI Market Days will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The market will feature fine art, handcrafted jewelry, clothing, arts and crafts, gourmet food mixes, product demos, pet items, live music and more. There will also be door prizes. Save the date for the Llano Grande Quilting Bee’s 12th Annual Quilt Show, Gems of the Valley, to be held Tuesday, January 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hynes Event Center 2215 East West Blvd (off Mile 2 West) in Mercedes. The Bee’s Opportunity Quilt is queen size measuring 88” x 99” and is sparkling with cream and blue blocks. Tickets can be purchased from any Bee member or at the show. The Mission Historical Museum gladly presents the 1979 western film: She Came to the Valley. The film is based on the novel written by local author, Cleo Dawson. The museum will be giving out a copy of the novel with the purchase of a ticket. Tickets are $5. You’ll have the option between two different screen times each day (10 a.m. and 2 p.m.).
