January 17-22

Rally on the Rio by the RGV Woodcarvers will be held with 18 of the best instructors from all over the United States coming to share their knowledge and skills. Classes in all types of woodcarvings and pyrography will be available. The event will be held at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana, Pharr. Workshop Wednesdays kicks off at IMAS at 4 p.m. live on Facebook with Surrealist Collage inspired by “Imagined Worlds: Exploring the Carlos Melguizo Collection.” This program is free for all registrants. A limited number of supply kits are available for registration each month and are to be picked up the weekend prior to the live workshop. IMAS publishes supply lists ahead of the workshop. Alfresco Weslaco will be held 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in historic downtown Weslaco. Free admission. The heart and soul of the community is in Downtown and Weslaco wants to share it with you by providing music and art. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes. SPI Market Days will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The market will feature fine art, handcrafted jewelry, clothing, arts and crafts, gourmet food mixes, product demos, pet items, live music and more. There will also be door prizes. You can guess a lot about an animal’s life when you inspect real skulls from mammals, birds, and reptiles. Edinburg Scenic Wetlands will host Mystery Skull from 10 to 11 a.m. to investigate some mystery skulls with the help of their naturalist educator. A Polka Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church. The church is located at 1105 Fern Ave. in McAllen.

High-energy “living room” swing band, Black Market Trust, is bringing their intricate harmonies and Rat Pack-style comedy to Christian Fellowship Church, 901 N. Save the date for the Llano Grande Quilting Bee’s 12th Annual Quilt Show, Gems of the Valley, to be held Tuesday, January 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hynes Event Center 2215 East West Blvd (off Mile 2 West) in Mercedes. The Bee’s Opportunity Quilt is queen size measuring 88” x 99” and is sparkling with cream and blue blocks. Tickets can be purchased from any Bee member or at the show. The Mission Historical Museum gladly presents the 1979 western film: She Came to the Valley. The film is based on the novel written by local author, Cleo Dawson. The museum will be giving out a copy of the novel with the purchase of a ticket. Tickets are $5. You’ll have the option between two different screen times each day (10 a.m. and 2 p.m.). Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1105 Fern Ave. W., in McAllen will hold its annual Community Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to noon, on both days. Sales items include kitchen wares and appliances, furniture, bedding, home décor, books, toys and more. No clothing will be offered. All proceeds go back to the community through church programs. A Quilt, Craft and Bake sale will be held at the Rio Grande Bible College. The event is held to raise funds for the students at the college. The event will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. A quilt auction will be held at 10 a.m. Rio Grande Bible College is located at 4300 S. US Highway 281 in Edinburg.

Registration is open for the Texas General Land Office (GLO) Adopt-A-Beach Winter Cleanup scheduled for Friday, February 4 at South Padre Island and Saturday, February 5 at six other locations across the Coastal Bend area. Adopt-A-Beach will provide trash bags, disposable gloves, and morning refreshments. Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of drinking water. GLO Adopt-A-Beach Winter Clean Up at SPI will be Friday, February 4. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Clean up to take place from 9 a.m. to noon. The Festival of Tables is set for Wednesday, February 23, 2022, with limited set up on Tuesday after 8 p.m. at Trophy Gardens (800 SH 495, Alamo). Confirm, or change your RSVP, with Jan Bergman at (956) 532-1223. At last count there were 25 tables. Thirty tables have been the goal for the event. More table settings are available, but more hostesses and themes are needed.
