It’s always fun to take a stroll through one of local World Birding Center parks. Last week we went out to the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse to see what was happening at the park. Main goal was to catch the model trains in action, but the offices had closed early, so we decided to walk part of the trail and enjoy some of the grounds.
A Mandarin Duck was recently the main attraction at Pendleton Park in Harlingen. It was a sight to see for many birders in the area, and there were many that made a drive to Harlingen to see if they could spot the rare bird – that really shouldn’t be where it was found.
The weather has been really nice lately. It has been good to get outside and enjoy the cool breeze. With these mini cold fronts, we have been able to enjoy some nice temps, although not always long lasting, it brings hope for the fall temps that should be here soon.
This time of year is a great time to get out and explore. It’s not too hot, and it isn’t too cold yet either. Of course, it’s rarely too cold to be outside in South Texas. I know that is why you love visiting our area while it is snowing in your other home.
The Valley is full of places to visit, sites to see, and things to do. Make sure you look through our calendars to find something interesting.
Concerts and other events are taking off right now. And because the holidays are right around the corner, there are several holiday themed events coming up, too. If you have the opportunity, go out to the events and support your local arts, chambers, and other organizations that put these events together.
There are many outdoor and indoor activities that will be happening from now through the New Year. We will have many of these in our events calendar and we will highlight some of the events in our news.
Indoor activities include museum exhibits, concerts, and some festivals. Outdoor events are always happening at the nature centers and World Birding Center parks. Some of these parks even feature nature series talks inside and tours outside.
Be sure to find out what is going on in your local community. While your park has a lot of options to keep you entertained, there is a community outside of that eager to see you as well.
As always, if you have any news items, interesting people in your park, an organization that needs some recognition, fundraisers happening, please feel free to email us at news@wintertexantimes.com.
We are truly blessed. For the most part we are able to enjoy the great outdoors throughout the entire year. Plus added to that enjoyment we have cities who are always promoting entertainment and special parades and festivals. So many of these festivals are annual events and occur about the same time each year. If you haven’t done so already, why not mark your calendars with carry over dates for 2023.
Kent Taylor is a quiet man.
His charro beans, however, speak volumes. Not the way, though, you might be thinking.
Made from a recipe simply titled “Janet Lee’s Charro Beans,” their smell wafts through the air every Tuesday at Sleep Valley RV Park for Taco Tuesday, a tradition at the park since close to a decade ago.
Winter Texan parks have a myriad of activities
The Winter Texan Times has been featuring activities at the local Winter Texan parks since its inception, after all, that was part of the intent of the paper – to highlight the parks and the activities held within them.
In its first issue, and during its first season, the Winter Texan Times featured small articles submitted by the parks, talking about their activities, what the park had to offer, and more. This week I am going to delve into some of these activities and mention some of those that take place today.
The McAllen International Airport (MFE) recently celebrated the opening of its annual Ofrenda Exhibit, now on display through November 7, in the airport lobby.
“By putting up Ofrendas, families in Mexico remember their loved ones as part of Mexico’s Día de Muertos. The folklore vested around this holiday continues to enrich our community,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “This is the fourth year we display an Ofrenda in the Airport lobby for the community and travelers visiting our city.”
On Saturday, November 12, upper valley residents will join the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease at the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® — the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

The Aliento a Tequila (or The Spirit of Tequila) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape, culture, and traditions that gave birth to tequila, Mexico’s national drink. In this series, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that literally founded the industry, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle. Aliento a Tequila is supported by L&F Distributors and opens Thursday, November 10 at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen.
