Thirty-five years ago, our first issue highlighted how much Winter Texans love to help while visiting the Rio Grande Valley. In this article I will give a throwback of the many places Winter Texans volunteered and give a snapshot of where Winter Texans volunteer today. The 16th Annual 2022 Fiesta de Palmas is set for this weekend, October 21st through 23rd, and promises to be the biggest Fiesta yet.
The event is to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the McAllen Convention Center and will feature a hefty line up of live music, carnival rides, diverse foods, and interactive activities.

The Humane Society of Harlingen dog kennels are at capacity. HSH is asking the community to help find foster or forever homes for their canine friends. Dogs will be at risk of euthanasia if they cannot make space through adoption or foster.

Hilos de Tradición: Dresses of Mexico, an exhibition created in collaboration with the Brownsville Historical Association, opens at the Bullock Texas State History Museum this Saturday, October 1. The exhibition is presented in Spanish and English and features outfits that represent the traditional textiles, art, dance, and culture of every state of Mexico.

Every day, the Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people coping with effects of natural disasters. Red Cross volunteers who are licensed healthcare and mental health providers show up to meet needs. The American Red Cross, Texas Gulf Coast Region, invites you to join their team as a part of the Be One, Bring One campaign as the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. You can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare or licensed mental health provider and volunteer to deliver hands-on care or mental health support to those in need. Free online training is provided, and you can earn continuing education hours. Apply today to become a Disaster Health Services or Disaster Mental Health Professional volunteer so those in need don’t have to face tough times alone.

Organizers for the McAllen Holiday Parade have invited the community to be a part of this year’s festivities in various ways, including, a special call for entries for the McAllen Holiday Shoebox Parade. Additionally, the parade is seeking volunteers and high school bands throughout the region to be a part of the magical tradition and, thanks to the partnership with McAllen I.S.D., MHP stadium tickets are on sale for McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, from where the parade steps off and pre-parade festivities take place, on Saturday, December 3, 2022, starting at 6 p.m.
