SPI Kite Fest a breeze

The SPI Kite Fest was quick and easy to spot, with very few clouds in the sky some kites could be clearly seen from the other side of the bridge in Port Isabel. I followed a line of cars weaving across the flats next to the SPI Convention Centre, found a parking space of sorts, and took some time in the car to layer on some gloves, a scarf, and a beanie. The weather was hovering around the high 40s to low 50s, but there was a pretty intense wind as well. This wind I’m sure, though I’m not a kite-flier, was beneficial to the dozens of kites that were maintaining their place in the sky.

Tim Hadler presents Gumi benefit show

20220209 Tim HadlerTim Hadler, a native of Washington State, grew up on a farm with a love of music. He often jokes that his first audience were the cows he milked. Hadler moved to Nashville shortly after graduating to pursue a career in music.

Listening to his music, his voice is reminiscent of the old-time country legends and is only part of the reason why he does a tribute show to Williams. In a news article, Tim said, “It’s America’s music. I love it.” He added that his tribute to Williams has been a ‘learning experience and a good time.’

Entertainers shine at Showcase

20220112 20 Entertainers Showcases CBrunson IMG 6718Mission Bell’s Hall was full of clapping, cheering, singing, and music throughout the day during this year’s Entertainers Showcases. The showcases highlight entertainment that’s available to Valley activity directors throughout the Valley. This is the opportunity for activity directors to book well known entertainment and listen to some new entertainment as well that provide music for shows, dances, happy hours, and line dancing.

This year’s events saw some of the Valley’s favorites and had quite a few new groups and individuals too. All the entertainment received great feedback from the crowd. This is a show you will never see anywhere else.

Woodcarvers show the magic found in wood

20220114 Woodcarvers Show HMiller 08Walking through the 36th annual RGV Woodcarvers Show this past weekend, it was clear that if you can envision it, someone can carve, sculpt, burn, paint or chip it into reality.

More than 150 pieces covering a wide spectrum of images and styles were on display over the weekend at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr. There were decoys, caricatures, walking canes, gourds, pens, candles and so much more as the carvers showed what can be done with wood.

Bloodless bullfights return to Santa Maria

Santa Maria P Campero WEBAlthough he was in a brief retirement, Fred Renk is back at it this season. Due to the hundreds of phone calls received requesting the continuance of putting on the world class bloodless bullfights, Renk is proud to announce they will be coming out of retirement to re-open for at least two bullfights this season.

“For the last 20 years we have put on world class bloodless bullfights and will continue to do so as long as people want us,” said Renk. “We cannot turn them down.”

The Santa Maria Bullring is one of the only bullrings in 49 states. For now, the Renks, Fred and his wife Lisa, will be managing the events.
