20220209 Kansas Day 01Submitted by Larry Schmitt and Jan Bergman

On January 26, two hundred ten Kansans from various Parks/Resorts throughout the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s 161st year admission to the Union, January 29, 1861. It was so great for we Kansans to be together again, and the old-timers enjoyed meeting the thirty-three Kansans attending for the first time…. yay!!! As before, Trophy Gardens RV Resort is a great venue for this size of crowd.

20220209 Kansas Day 05Ballis Catering of Mission served a delicious sit-down, plated meal at noon. Comments on the food and service were ultra-complimentary. Rusty Rierson, home grown entertainer from Augusta, KS provided the entertainment. Rusty delighted the Kansas crowd with jokes, songs he composed and many all-time favorites.

Jan Bergman, Chair of the event and Larry Schmitt, Communications and Reservations, facilitated the day’s events. No event of this size can occur without impressive Volunteers. Jan and Larry give thanks to the following that were involved in either the setup/tear-down of tables and chairs, registration, collecting monies, and/or distributing of the raffle prizes: Randy LeMasters, Benny Robbins, and Hank Waggoner, Chanute; Pat and Richard Carey, Ottawa; Ivalee Vanderhoff, Halstead; Bill and Mary Ann Niemann, Eric and Lois Niemann, Melvin and Emily Nolting, Nortonville; Ronny and Teresa Gleason, Dave and Barb Hicks, Salina; Martha Schmitt, Shawnee; Bob and Darlene Hahn, Topeka; and Terry Dockter, Wamego.

20220209 Kansas Day 02Much appreciation also goes to Mike and Diana Maclaskey, Topeka, (residents of TG RV Resort) for leading the parking of vehicles and assisting in the other activities. We also want to thank Stephanie and Jason Skelly, Activities Department at TG RV Resort for being there when we needed them.

Jan works with businesses throughout the year to provide a variety of donations for the huge raffle that helps defray expenses. Also donating items for the raffle this year were: Ted and Pat Yoder, Spring Hill; Connie and Arnie Bowen and Julie and Joe Jackson, Topeka; Betty Grindol and Jim Colucci, Wichita; and Jim Lancaster, Ottawa. The raffle tickets sales were conducted by Garry and Cassino Richardson, Fort Scott.

Plans for the 2023 Celebration are in process. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 25, 2023. If Larry has your contact information, great. If not, please email your information to Larrys13@icloud.com. RSVP will be required.
