Bird watching in your own backyard

Bird Log Green Jay IMASJanuary 5 celebrated National Bird Day. The International Museum of Arts and Sciences had presented a lesson on creating your own backyard bird log on their website. Just because the day has past, does not mean you still cannot make one. The information is still on their website and available any time.

In 2002, Born Free USA, a non-profit focused on wildlife conservation, activism, and education, in collaboration with the Avian Welfare Coalition, launched the first annual National Bird Day to promote awareness of birds every January 5th. Many nature and bird lovers observe National Bird Day.

The Valley’s traveling Veggie Man

Veggie Man IMG 2970He goes by “Pineapple Joe,” or “Big Joe.”

At Canyon Lake RV Resort, on the marker board outside the dining hall, it simply reads: 4 p.m. - Veggie Man.

All of those monikers represent Jose Ybarra and for 21 years he has driven his portable market stand filled with produce and more to Winter Texan parks across the Rio Grande Valley. He brings good deals, fresh vegetables, fruits and more and when his truck appears in a park/resort, the lines start growing.

While the coronavirus pandemic has restructured the way people live, they still need to eat, and Ybarra provides. While the lines may not be as long as in the past, they still know when Ybarra is about to show up and they have their internal clocks ready.

January 5, 2021 - Rina's Ramblings

So, the new year is here and my only thought, or type of resolution, is to work on myself more and finish some crafts that have been sitting around.

I love to start things, but have a hard time finishing them. I have a cross-stitch project I started working on probably seven months ago and I have not even touched it for about two months.

I have material cut out to make potholders. I have one side of squares cut out but have not done the others. I think that project has been sitting around for about two years.

I have mugs that I need to make the decals for. I have a canvas with some vinyl on it that I need to repair. I have jewelry pieces to make a set (necklace, earrings, and bracelet) that I just have not gotten to. And that one has been sitting around for about two years as well.

Remembering the Positives

WEB On The Road HeaderIt is a NEW YEAR! And let us hope that 2021 will bring an end to the pandemic and the problems we all encountered in 2020. Hopefully by mid-year, we all will have been vaccinated and we will be on the road to our... ‘new normal’ or whatever is in store for us in our future.

First Showcase next week

Every year the Activity Directors Association and Robert and Billie Ferguson put on two Showcase events. These events introduce the Valley’s activity directors to entertainment that comes to the Valley to entertain you. It gives them a chance to get an idea of what the entertainment is like, a sampling of what they do, and then an opportunity to book these Wintertainers™ for next season, or even the current season if spots are available.

The event is not open to the general public, but only to Activity Director Association members. Tickets are required for the events.

This year’s Showcases will be held at Mission Bell Resort in Mission on Wednesday, January 13 and Thursday, January 21. The January 13 Showcase will start at 11 a.m., with people starting to gather at around 10 a.m. Coffee and donuts will be available from 9 a.m. to noon. Lunch will be at 1 p.m. and the showcase should end about 4 p.m.

January 21 begin at 8 a.m. The Thursday Showcase should run to about noon.

If you haven’t received your tickets, or are interested in becoming an association member, call Billie Ferguson at (865) 253-2514.

Current social distancing and safety protocols will be in place.
