Nature and outdoor activities continue

Outdoor ACtivities Treasure Hunt Green Jay portraitThe Rio Grande Valley is full of nature centers and birding sites. These parks are continuing to have activities. For those that stay a little longer, or are full time residents, these are some of the activities you can still catch in the wonderful outdoors of the Rio Grande Valley.

The Valley Nature Center will hold their first annual fishing tournament, Rock the Dock, at Lobo Del Mar on South Padre Island. The event will take place on June 5 from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration is currently open and closes on May 30. Cost is $350 per team. For more information, visit valleynaturecenter.org.

Quinta Mazatlán to host presentation

Sandra 9Quinta Mazatlán is hosting presenter Sandra Villegas on Thursday, March 25, starting at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán. Villegas, who has her Master’s in Public Health, is the Nutrition Education Manager at the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. Here, Villegas will demonstrate and prepare two recipes using the native plants prickly pear and mesquite flour as well as discuss the benefits of eating and using native plants, how to start a small container garden, what the best herbs are to start with, and how healthy lifestyles overall are the foundations to a healthy self.

Archivist to discuss Rio Grande history

Martin SalinasThe Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas for his bilingual presentation, “Entorno, arqueología y el primer poblamiento del bajo Río Grande o Bravo,” at 2 p.m. on March 28 on Facebook Live.

This presentation will feature the details on the physiographic and environmental changes of South Texas and northeastern Mexico in the last millenia, and the first peoples’ adaptations to the environment as understood through archaeological work. Museum CEO Francisco Guajardo will moderate the presentation. This presentation is part of a series, which is scheduled quarterly, that will explore the life and culture of the first peoples of the Rio Grande as observed through archaeological findings and analysis of Spanish documents. The World of Frida opens at IMAS

IMAS FRIDA Villez Parakata PoderosaThe International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) announces the opening of a new exhibit, The World of Frida, on Saturday, March 27, with a special IMAS member preview on Friday evening, March 26.

The World of Frida celebrates the culture, style, and persona of visionary painter Frida Kahlo, an artist who continues to inspire with her story of love, adventure, and pain. Featuring a variety of national and international artists working in a wide array of media, the exhibition includes Frida Kahlo as the subject, as well as artworks inspired by her life and art, her beautiful garden, Mexican culture and fashion, vibrant colors, surrealism, and more.

UFO Festival seeking vendors

The Edinburg UFO Festival is now accepting vendors for their ninth annual Edinburg UFO Festival. The festival will be held April 8 through April 10. Vendors will be accepted for products related to the topic of UFOs.

The festival was inspired by an incident in 1966 in north Edinburg where nine witnesses saw a flying object strike their vehicle. The Edinburg UFO Festival is third ranked in the United States and third in the World. The festival will kick off with the open mic at the iconic Edinburg Municipal Auditorium on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m.

Texas A&M Forest Service launches nature challenge

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Nature Challenge website launched recently, connecting Texans with fun, creative ways to explore the outdoors, learn new skills and get involved in their community. This statewide tool is the result of a shared vision between Texas Children in Nature Network, Texan by Nature and Texas A&M Forest Service.

The Nature Challenge desktop website encourages Texans to explore nature near and far by completing challenges and earning digital badges, allowing users to track their progress in a Challenge Progress Report.

“Often times, the hardest part about getting out into nature and improving the environment is simply knowing where to start,” said Jacey Tosh, Texas A&M Forest Service Conservation and Education Coordinator. “Nature Challenge makes it easier than ever by connecting Texans with opportunities to learn new skills, have some fun and make a difference at the same time.”

VSO presents final digital concert of season

Springtime Schumann Quintet RehearsalThe Valley Symphony Orchestra announces the final digital concert of its online season premiering March 19. "Springtime Schumann" will premiere live on YouTube at 7 p.m. on the 19th and there will be an encore broadcast on KRGV-Ch. 5 on March 21 at 11 a.m. “Springtime Schumann” is the last in a series of digital concerts that began in Fall 2020, the first season of its kind for the Symphony that arose as a response to Covid-19 public health restrictions.

Bearing Witness: A MOSTHistory Collection

mosth CEO Francisco GuajardoThe Museum of South Texas History will host a closing reception on the Bearing Witness initiative during the Sunday Speaker Series Online presentation at 2 p.m. on March 21 on Facebook Live.

Bearing Witness documented the lives of community members who were lost to COVID-19 in the year 2020 through a series of articles published in conjunction with local newspapers The Monitor, Valley Morning Star and The Brownsville Herald. The museum’s initiative to preserve and present stories of the COVID-19 pandemic was spearheaded by Exhibits Coordinator Melissa Peña and CEO Francisco Guajardo. Peña and Guajardo will share stories on the process and impact of writing about local community members and the loved ones whom they lost due to COVID-19 complications.
